Greetings BHW,

I'm GNEWS

I'm doing a regular contribution here to the BHW forum to exercise my passion for writing. This is my 'next How To' set up. I would not consider myself a Google News Approved Sites expert, if I have never worked at Google. The intricacies of algorithm and updates is way too tricky for me to title myself that, being a non-employee.

However, I will say I'm one of the most experienced you will find on-line. Why? I have consistently worked with GNAS and blogs since 2004 and have over 17 years experience at this point. I sold that first website I owned to someone who would today, become a silent owner in Instacart and had several licensing deals with Yahoo! before they launched their network. An internet 'guru' by all regards, who also introduced me to the tips and tricks of how to use GNews properly.

Anyhow. Today we have 2 different kinds of Google News Approved Sites. I'm going to give some basic outlines to their differences. But as always, I cannot give you all, every detail I have. This is how I maintain my business, so I need to keep some of my 'pointers' to myself and my team.

KEY / Things to Remember:
Google Search Index = regular google search
Google News Search Index = the 'search' for 'News' on Google.com
GNAS = Google News Approved Sites
G1 = Generation 1
G2 = Generation 2

I encourage others to share information you have in replies / comments. Please don't steal my post, as I saw happen with my "How to Farm Reddit Karma for Dummies" post. Please leave a like if you appreciate the content.

Pre-2021 GNAS: Generation 1 vs Post-2021 GNAS: Generation 2

G1
Starting off, lets talk Generation 1, pre-2021 Google News Approved Sites. Simply put, these sites are better to utilize for back-links in most cases, as of right now. Google's investing billions into this program however, so again, this is a 'general' but not all cases rule. And it can change.

Reasons it's better:
  • The GNAS G1 network was STRICTLY moderated. Google manually approved each site. Higher Quality Sites.
  • These sites are older. Generally have a lot more content.
  • All posts on G1 sites typically gets Indexed
  • All posts on it's news index (may be home page) get indexed quickly in Google search and Google News search indexes. (within 10 minutes of posting)
  • G1 sites tend to get "Top Stories" feature in Google search index (there's methods to do this but you need budget)
  • G1 Sites tend to get priority in SERPS but not always.
  • G1 Sites almost always get priority in Google News Search Index
  • Quality sites gets a lot of syndication .... 100 sites might pick up a story, and the links actually count/help your site as Google knows how to recognize syndication
  • These sites had to produce upwards of 10 pages of news content daily at one point.. then it was 20+ .... Usually there's a great intrinsic SEO value on these sties because the depth of content is always growing

G2
Google News sites are being 'slung around' on SEO/Guest Post marketplaces now in what looks like a hot mess unfolding to me. I expect Google to have to correct this in time. In/Around the beginning of 2021, Google began opening the 'Google News Approved Site Network" to people via the Publisher center ( no linking directly here on BHW, so: support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9607025 )

Why they did this? My assumption is because of all the giant media corporations of the world trying to tag-team against Google to force them to payout money for using their headline and 'article previews/summaries.'

Google's playing 'chess' by investing billions into smaller, independent news companies now and likely under contract. Making sure they can't sue Google. A concentration of this investment was done in India. Why India? My guess, cheap production but i don't think this will go over completely well. News won't be done right if the culture doesn't have an innate connection to English-Native cultures and that's Google's bread and butter in the News world.

Anyhow, now people can simply add their website to "Google News" by using the publisher center. No more manual approval. Google knows many of these sites will not be trash in the beginning, which they are, but they are building an algorithm to weed out the garbage (my theory).

So a lot of the sites you see right now, as they are getting flagged down and spammed out, Google's not featuring all of their content on the "Google News Search Index." Instead, my theory is that they only feature High Retention content where users actually sit on the page a while. Average to above average lengths.

And of course some people will find ways to find loopholes, but as with all things google, the algorithm will sniff them out and ghost/sandbox them in time. This is again, my theory of what's going on.

Here's the benefits of G2 sites:
  • Gets you listed in Google News index but if the site's low effort/quality, it will likely disappear from SERP initially seen. Maybe even the first day.
  • It's still fast indexing on Google search
  • Syndication can still happen
  • These are usually a lot cheaper than G1 sites, since people can get them GNAS listed so fast
  • A group of these can be used to perform some 'cool thing' for ORM or building a project
  • Quality sites still have intrinsic SEO value

The sites that are lower efforts can still be great for tier 2 linkage. You should definitely have wisdom of experience when basing a project on Google News sites that are lower quality. If not, don't be surprised if that 'delicious meal' you had on the table falls to the ground and gets wasted, because you brought cheap legs for the project.

And honestly.......... Too many people are pimping out GNAS that allow guest posting, currently. We all work for profit but some people are just tossing 'shit-articles' on 'Filet Mignon.' Some are just tossing 'shit-articles' on 'spam'. The shit on Filet Mignon may survive, if the content isn't too trash. The shit on spam will definitely cause you a loss in the future.

The importance of quality writing can't be stated enough.
Writers are GOLDEN in this digital era. Invest money into a quality article and you will get high retention.
Google Loves High Retention content.

I've developed a 7 point formula that I use to maximize Google News Approved Sites projects. I'm sure others have their own methodology.

If you have some tips, share below. I hope this helps some of you.

Can you tell me more this?

My method, I can't elaborate on.

It takes thousands of dollars to experiment and learn. Sometimes you might luck up though, I've had some Top Stories happens with like a $500 job. But that was likely because of the consistency for months up to that point.

The tip, in case it went over your head though... You need budget and consistency to figure out what works for you.

I have a question about Google News Approve Sites. (in my case, the generation 2).

So I managed to get my 2 websites approved this year. I write and publish medical articles, high quality (updated knowledge, backed up by medical textbooks and published research papers), no selling or advertorial articles, ... yet they did not have a single view through google news. I have 100,000 organic pageviews per month through google search with several articles on first page in multiple languages, but not a single one through google news.
And I often see crappy websites, clearly spam, publishing fake news in the medical field, publishing wrong information in the health & wellness niche, etc. that show on my google news feed.
Does it simply take time, like it would to get simply ranking on first page on google once you first start a website, or is it random luck, or do you need to build "authority" (crappy website may have built authority with black hat backlinks) in order to be seen in the google news feed from your experience?

Sounds like you know what you're doing, but let me ask:

1) Is your RSS Feed & Sitemap set up well?
2) What's your average user retention?
3) How many new pages of unique news content are you publishing daily & is it innovaite?
4) Do you have a social media following for this site?

Show me an example of the 'crappy site' you see on Google News search. That way I can give you a more detailed opinion if you like.

I def wouldnt' OVER-worry myself with competing if I know my visitors are satified. If you keep the visitors coming and happy, your authority will rise. However, i also wonder, about your content production daily.

Nice informative writeup.

One thing am sensing is that the amount of regular fresh content matters a lot for rankings in news or general search pages.

Is that right?

Quantity and Quality is what matters. Also good to get syndication from legit sources I believe.

The sites that are really killing it right now that I see, have big social media presences too.

Really interesting topic, thanks for sharing. ;)

I have a question for you:

I have a site that generate thousand of people daily, and the site appears and disappears on google news or discovery.
For a week it appears in a row and then disappears for another 3 weeks.

The metrics are great, a good ctr, a low exit rate and a long time spent on the page.

So my question arises, the problem is that I only publish 1 article a day? And if so ... how many on average should I publish to start moving things?

Note: When I appear on news or discovery, on news I get 10% of the visitors and on discovery i got the 90% of the traffic. (This thing is always related to the production of articles or not? As in discovery section I see a lot of sites that publish one or less article per day.)

If you want your best results, 24 articles a day minimum. 1 per hour. When any site shows activity hourly, Google gives it preferred rankings and placements in my experience.

With consistency, you will be competing with the bigger boys.

Thanks, i will definitely try it.

Is it right to have an editorial staff composed of several people and to take care of the bio page of each of these?
(Instead of publishing all the articles under the same person's name)

Yup. Need to make it look like you have a team. I'd suggest 7-8 profiles.
