I read a ton of the posts here (great people here) and have been scratching my head about how to best take advantage of being a registered google news inclusion editor.
I don't recall seeing much on Gnews Inclusion so I thought I would share some of what I have been experiencing. I've done some pretty nifty things with it, it might be surprising what it can pull off.
Quick background on the applying site:
1) the application took 3 weeks to get approved
2) the applying site was a 501c(4) corp
3) The PR of the site was 3 at time of application, now is 4
4) the domain age is 8 years
5) almost non-existent content at the time of application, fresh site re-design and a featured news column. The news column had about 35 posts in it, showing daily activity. non automated, but mostly all pulled from the net and hand spun.
6) the account i used as credentials was an account managed by google domain, hosted mail, site run separately typical google profile. age about 1 year, with a social footprint. (i mention this because of the modern fraud scrubbing pattern, if an email has no social footprint : escalate fraud scrub) [if you would like to know the social footprints on the account PM me]
7) a .org domain
8) you need to meet the technical requirements, which is really easy in wordpress. change your permalink structure to have a /4242%post_id%/ on the end, note the 4242, use any numbers, the key thing is that all id's are at least 4 digits. a blog with little content needs some padding. in my case, i needed to do that (self serving back scratch, sorry)
Ok, now to the experience
Prior to consulting with this (the site) group, the average daily traffic was about 15-30 visitors, really only people directly affiliated trying to sell donations. Rarely a random stranger with an up-sell opportunity. Dismal situation for this non-profit group who I came to learn about through family. What they represent is really a great thing, and 83%+ of all money actually does go to a real thing that helps people who serve in the mil. So i was sold as to providing some advice to them. All advise had to on "the level" and very legit. So this was a fun challenge.
So I applied for gnews, thinking "what the hell, never gotten that" and writing that off. however.....I was approved. And so I started:
Here is the confirmation email part worth noting (kinda long, but curious what people think):

So essentially the Category_ parts really caught my interest, so I experimented with it a bit. BTW, Military Affairs is related to the site's PR.
I started initially posting original content, op/ed pieces i knew I had unique because of the retarded newspaper that printed a newsletter didn't have an online presence. I contacted the editing dept, and they send me word docs.
I posted the first article, and it became the #1 post on google news search results for the keyword i knew had real volume every day. within 3 minutes. The volume of traffic I was expecting was less then i well....expected. Using samurai, i knew the keyword was big, but not sure of the share of traffic from Gnews. But, it was noticeable to say the least!
Then I had to start thinking about exploiting this ability, which is what (if you have been reading this long) I am going to reveal.
1) Major posts on WAY BIGGER sites out there rarely include an image. Match the keywords the best you can, find an article on BLOG search from a site you KNOW is not on news inclusion and has shitty SEO. but decent content. lift that content, adjust as needed, and craft a fresh post. Then search google images, for a good image, an eye popping one. Download that image to your local host, DO NOT hotlink it. Upload to your favorite CMS (i prefer wordpress) and float that image in the first line.
2) learn the google news sitemap format, and make sure it is in your webmaster tools. if you are not permitted yet, webmaster tools will report that, however, get it in there and monitor your access logs so you know it is crawling the content. the bot tag looks like this:
"GET /google-news-sitemap.xml HTTP/1.1" 304 0 "-" "Googlebot-News"
This news format is where you can shine. let me explain. You would be surprised how many huge news sites fail to properly site NYSE/NASDAQ stock tickers relative to the content. So i do, and the long tail benefit of simply showing up on etrade for a stock ticker is huge, if only for 30 minutes. If someone cites that content from you, long term residual traffic has been my experience.
Quick Review:
I cite a stock ticker in every post if a company is mentioned in the post, using the correct format, at time i cite 8 companies. Those times are typically the best.
I layout an image that links to the larger image or nothing on every post. This image is typically float: left on all posts, the first line in the post content.
What happens: well people are lazy, and have bad accuracy on their computer pointing device, an image is a target rich environment. Especially on smart phone users. So when you look at gnews, you see images almost 100% of the time. The image URL is not always the top ranking article url! If you are the only or first provider of an image, you WILL BE THE IMAGE.
The stock tickers, google finance has a ton of auto bloggers using it. If you cite the ticker correctly, the auto bloggers feed off your content, as well as legitimate users. google finance overall is a failure, active traders have their own platforms, and only use them for authoritative information. This can create the occasional traffic spike. In addition, people search news based on ticker alone, you will now show up. you might be surprised how many apps and people do that, it's an easy way to get long tail traffic.
This is such a long post now that i scroll up, i think i will cut myself off. I'd really like to hear about other experiences, strategies, etc. This is unphamiliar territory (UPT) for me.
I'm pretty new to BHW, so for all i know everyone will be like "dude, this is so obvious, you are newb". I am looking for new ideas on how to use this, which I am willing to try so long as they are not retarded and ultra black hat. I have adsense and cj on the target site as well, so It's in my best interest to really explore the feedback i hear here. For people that really have an idea they have wanted to try (I am a software engineer by trade, webmaster by choice) I can code it up and try it out, and share to the world or privately. A small price (hours of coding) if the ideas shared are good.
Werd up.
