    here is the problem
I used to come up first in google maps for a long keyword

I wont reveal the keyword, but here an example

    web design company los angeles
I was number one for such keyword in the local results section.

then I did some SEO for my site, focusing on the keyword
    "web design company"

and now the maps section does not show me anymore in the results.
i thought I would become stronger in the maps as a result of the seo. strange, huh?

maybe your competition realized you top them and they starting adding citations and reviews, just make sure you get more reviews and citations than them and put as much info as you can in your google page. There is other threads here that cover how to get better at getting on google local pages

so you did general seo for your site, totally unrelated to your Google Places listing and now the Google Places listing is gone? Does it show up anywhere at all (the top 5, top 10, top 25, etc.) or are you totally gone?

Did you have a legit address for the Places listing? Were you using proxies to build up your Places listing?

It could be a number of things that happened. Give us some more info to help.

    let me share a story =}

I was working in my local area for a local listing.
The company that was #1 for my local listing was a spam listing
out of CA. I (without the ended intention) bought a domain that was VERY similar.

i emailed the person and asked them to remove the listing as i didnt want to ruin any other 'possible' listing they MAY have. no response. so i took it into my own hands.
i reported it as spam with 2 different accounts and left 2 bad reviews stating this company was NOT infact local. all the while i was building my local setup.

again, my url was VERY close to the other persons but still, even one letter, one dash, one dot, should not have effected this in this way..
a week later, my listing had REPLACED his. as in those bad reviews were left on me and i went straight to #1! but it had my address and phone?!?!

    weird!

Many people here in the forum post when something happens to their sites or listings, which is fine, we are in it to assist each other...

BUT, before posting your questions do a research on your competitors, who "for some reason," now is above you in the rankings. Or the why those listings
are being taken to the top instead of yours (who dropped or disappeared)As much as we want to help, never there is enough information to do so
because there is the need to protect your own business.

We all know that reviews and citations influence the listings...but how many of you go through your competitors' listings to see which
and where a review was indexed so you can go there and a create one for your listings, or 2, 3...?

How many have taken the time to analyze the title of the posts? The keywords written in the body of the post (Which now IT SHOWS BOLDED)?
Have you (anyone) written a list of Local Directories that are SPECIFICALLY important to a niche? NOTHING here is different from analyzing
    competitors' backlinks which everybody does.

Local Maps has its own rules as we all know, but the "CORE" is still the same:

    *Authoritive Backlinks (Citations and Reviews)
    *Number of Citations and Reviews
    *How well spread (time-wise)
*Activity (Answer to some of the posts, Coupons, Updates, Promotions, etc)

We all learn when questions are posted in the board, there is no doubt about that. What I am saying is:
"Take the time to research and analyze your competitors in the local listings the same way you do to your websites.
The benefit will be that You will not have to wait for days to have an answer YOU could've answered yourself."

And if your answer is "I'm a beginner." My answer is"Practice The Habit Of Analyzing." As in anything in life,
You can create "bad" or "good" habits... Pick one for your business!;)

Ok. I have not been very clear on what i mean
Now I will show you some pictures to make it easier to understand:

    Before, if someone googled
    "cheap immigration lawyer los angeles"
this is how the page looked: I was the guy at the very top of the page, with the map and phone number and everything.

I seoed the site for "cheap immigration lawyer" and of course the word los angeles is written all over the website. so I thought I would become even stronger. but now, this is how the page looks, the map has disappeared and I am on the bottom of page 1:

aaaah, google removed that from local!!

try to search for it in another city like NYC.
if no map appears, you will have to change up things
