Look at the following search result: http://www.google.com/search?q=costochondritis

Notice that the URL displayed under the search result, the URL of the link, and the URL of the final page are all different. Google is saying it's alright for them to setup a "custom" URL to display (google.com/health) then use a variable off google.com (to take advantage of google.com rank) to redirect to a final page that has essentially zero ranking in a traditional sense and should be nowhere near the top result.

Not only that but they also get to add a picture under their search result which basically no other site on the internet gets? Of course, the exception to this is YouTube, Google Images, etc which get to display visual information in search results.

This isn't going to be pretty if Google keeps expanding and using their own search engine control to advance the sites they create.

Google do what they want - when they want - how they want.

    We mean nothing to them.

Google builds its business around the idea of search. A search provider slipping in their own sites on top destroys trust. This should be a huge deal, I'm surprised you're so willing to let a corporation pound you in the ass.

    Look at this shit...

The first result says the URL is www.google.com/health

The ACTUAL link of the first result is http://www.google.com/url?q=http://...799617&usg=AFQjCNF4QiM8gow39vk8wvAn3PanXVbK3Q

The final page you end up on is https://www.google.com/health/ref/Costochondritis

Do any other pages get to display a URL that isn't the actual URL of the page? Do they get to immediately redirect traffic off a high PR page to a N/A PR page just so the N/A page ranks higher through the redirect link being indexed? Do they get to have a picture next to their search result?

Also, here is the basic redirect I'm talking about...

    http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.blackhatworld.com

    http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.youtube.com

Any URL you put in there that isn't owned by Google you have to "confirm" the redirect but if you put blogger.com, youtube.com, etc it's an instant redirect.

Google is using the high ranking of google.com combined with a simply variable redirect to rank any page they want first. Basically this link, http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.mysite.com, would rank first in Google because it's google.com but the actual site (mysite.com) you end up on could be completely worthless.

Of course Google can do whatever it wants but if it wants to stay in business it needs to retain users. If people complain about stuff like this then they won't do it. I'm seriously amazed that you are willing to say "oh well" instead of complaining to Google. It's not illegal but it's definitely immoral and considering Google makes almost all of its income off of advertisers and publishers they might not want to piss us off by deciding all the work we put into our rankings can be wiped out by them redirecting to a site off Google.com that has had zero work put into it to get it ranked.

LOL, Google will still be in business as long as their is still electriciy in the world.

You think the average searcher gives a shit about google favouring their sites at the top of the page?

So they should as well. What are you going to do, take out legal action against them? hahaha:tee:

Google has it`s own plans..Unfortunately, this plan doesn`t include internet marketers making any money.

I do not believe google are manipulating their own sites to appear first or at the top of pages because this goes directly against their Global missions statement which is also their first primary business directive which is to organize all of the information in the worlds in terms of most relevant according to searcher entered key words

Just my opinion, but conceptually, this is similar to what Microsoft was doing in the 90's during the "browser wars." It appears that Google is using their position to maintain an unfair advantage in the marketplace and ultimately limit competition.

    But that's nothing new...

As far as the redirects go, as annoying as it is for us as marketers, it is understandable that they would want to thwart potentially bad redirects so that their end users, the searchers, don't think they are clicking on a safe google site but end up on some really bad site that jacks up their computer. That would diminish their trust in google.

On a side note... Did you actually see what google.com/health goes to? I didn't even know about that service. I think they probably have better profiles on us than the FBI.

Just search for "keyword tool" and you'll see google's ppc ad at the top. Do you think that they are bid shifting and paying per click? lol. It's their search engine and of course they have the right to take advantage of it.
