Google lying when i check for search results in brackets?

Ive been analyzing backlinks of my and otehr ppls sites and notice loads of discrepancies.

When i search i site in quotes it will come up with say 300k results. but when i click to the last page of results the total results changes to 3000 or so always a tiny fraction of the orogianl number.

can anyone explain this?
