Just seen a post at JohnChow that google has lowered much value for the keywords in your domain name.
    How will that affect ranking?

yeah , i can see this change on my sites ... according to what i see on my sites (i have about 30 keyword domains) G are still crediting keyword domains , but they give it less credit .

However - if are targeting a keyword and you have a domain with that keyword it will still help you, just a little less then before ...

    My $0.02 :D

"This past month, a number of sites have been dropping in their rankings despite a long history of ranking high for their keyword phrases."

Uh, maybe their content or links are crap?

They don't provide any proof that domains names caused the drop.

It wouldnt make no sense for Google to do that, but google has been know to do stuff just coz it can. Either way even if this is true keyword domains will still be good :) you may just have to do some more work :p

Id like to know if this is true or whether its just part of the punishing micro-niche sites change (which is what a lot of exact domain names are used for).

this has to happen someday or the other. We got to believe that in case of micro-niche sites the quality of content does drop at times. Google someday will have to find out a way that will help the algo track which micro niche site is created specifically with the reason of gathering google traffic..though it is kinda impossible but it has to be done some day or the other by bigG

It makes completly sense because most keyword domains like. Washing-mashine-for-student.something are pure spam sites and nobody wants to read whats writen on this sites...

Google each of these separately and without quotes:

    "cheap yankee candles"
    "yankee candles cheap"

    "cheap yankee candles" rankings:

1st position - 2 month old domain, 19k backlinks (all untargeted spammy backlinks), PR 0, ZERO CONTENT (it even has "example posts" on the site...seriously, they are entitled "example post")
2nd position - 8 year old domain, over 160k backlinks to the domain, PR 2 (page, not domain)
    3rd position - 15 year old domain, over 35k backlinks, pr 5

    "yankee candles cheap" rankings:

1st position - Same as 1st position above
    2nd position - same as 1st position
    3rd position - same as 1st position
    4th position - same as 1st position
5th position - same as 2nd position above from other search phrase
6th position - as as 3rd position above from other search phrase

Stop reading other peoples results, thoughts & opinions and go make your own.

They will have changed it because once everyone cottoned on to the fact that you could put up an EMD and get an easy ranking, people started ranking crap thin sites on EMDs that affected the quality of the serps for surfers.

Obviously EMDs are going to continue to have some effect (since it's an easy way to categorize the content of the domain) but it's just been dampened slightly compared to other factors. It's not as if a decently promoted and put together domain on an EMD is going to suddently drop out of the serps, but shitty sites that relied on the EMD will have difficulties. I still see tons of EMDs ranking well. Business as usual.

I don't remember exactly but yesterday I was searching for some tutorial to search for nice keywords and I landed on a wordpress blog (which was ranked number 1) and its first article was the Hello World post! It even hadn't changed the default wordpress theme though ads were inserted smartly. It was weird but just because the domain had keyword in its domain so it was ranking number 1. Insane!

LOL you're still ranking number 1 for this?

I see what you're saying but you also have to take into account that for

    allintitle:cheap yankee candles
    About 2,240 results

That's not a lot of competition.

    To the OP:

I found the devaluing of KW domain names starting back last May I think. Whenever they had another really big update.

Here's what I found. For low competition keywords it seems to carry more weight in searches. For mid to high competition it is very negligible in the benefit you receive.

Now this is anecdotal evidence that I noticed while creating and ranking sites. I don't have hard facts it's just a pattern I picked up on.

I still try to get KW domains whenever possible, especially for less competitive kws or local kws. For higher competition sites I don't worry as much about it and try to get something relevant with maybe a partial keyword match.

    Hope that helps.

    I agree with this too:

Matt Cutts earlier this year, "Now if you're still on the fence, let me just give you a bit of color, that we have looked at the rankings and the weights that we give to keyword domains, and some people have complained that we're giving a little too much weight for keywords in domains. And so we have been thinking about adjusting that mix a little bit and sort of turning the knob down within the algorithm, so that given two different domains it wouldn't necessarily help you as much to have a domain with a bunch of keywords in it."
