I got to rank No. 1 for a keyword with 49,500 Global & Local Searches , image below

But my webmaster tool tells me differently, i only get a fraction of 49,500. Image below
    [IMG]

There are just only 6,500 impressions(which may include my own search on the keyword, and competitors) for that keyword for which am on 1 place, and i only get less than 25% of the available impression at 1,600 every month.

So in conclusion the actual real traffic is 1,600. To reduce each traffic figure from GKW with such fractions can be disheartening.

untick "broad" and tick "exact" instead. Now what are the results?

You have "broad" checked. You need to select "exact" to get accurate results.

Broad, try exact. Should give you more of an accurate result

Precisely, "broad" results are usually far bigger than the "exact" results if you're targeting a particular keyword.

Dude... have you ever heard of Exact Match? You might be ranking for the broad keyword you see in the keyword tool, but it consists of more keywords where you are probably not ranking for.

This is quite pathetic...... no offense :p

As everyone else said, broad is different than exact. Broad shows how many people are typing in something broadly related to your keyword. Exact shows how many people are typing in your exact keyword.

    Now you have three options:

    1) Use the authority you have built with this site to target other related keywords.

    2) Start new sites based on this new information about broad/exact.

    3) Give up.

Everyone is joking mate. Select "BROADER" or "BROADEST" or "GREATEST" options. :)

I think you now have to target a variety of keywords and build the sites content.

I remember making the same mistake. I was so pumped up to see an EMD for a keyword that has around 20k searches.

    I'm such a noob.

What I did was to target another keyword that has 1,000 exact searches. It's not much. But it's way higher than the exact searches of my original keyword.

Here is a image I took just now that explains all.

You have to check the "Exact" tab to get the accurate results.

    Hope that helps

    Have a great day

ha i remember doing this also a few years ago and was so pumped to get first page with sleepless night to find out i was doing it wrong. At least you are getting 25% of the traffic. so what you need to do now is find the exact matches for the broad keyword and target those on the same site. ALL is not lost!
