It sucks, period nothing more you can say about it, but I think the only takeaway is that you have to make your site not just some regular review site or plain vanilla one; just make it unique and have it stand out. There is nothing gained by harping on this as its out of our control

Very Expected from them, they are basically killing the SEO as they don't need it anymore. Their traffic are satisfied with paid results, so why bother.
Just like any digital product. Ahrefs for example started with 30 days free trial, then 14 days free trial, then 7 days free trial, and finally 7 days for 7 dollars. Why, because they are well-known enough not to give anything for free.
Google is no different, first they needed webmasters to get visitor to search through them. Then they add their ads. Then Shopping results. Then google maps results, then, feature snippet. Now they are capturing +90% for any searched query through their chosen paid or not results. So, its time to kill free search results as they don't worth the money anymore.
Only difference is Webmasters were the real product of Google, without them, there would be no google at all.
You know there is a popular say, If you are not paying for the product, then you are the product. Google and Webmasters appears to be a clear example on this.

irony is when we have our own website we try to monetise it with affiliate link posts+ google ads+ news letter spam and what else... and when we see a big brand doing the same we try to criticize..
