I am hoping I can get some advice as I am really unsure about what's happening right now with one of my domains and the way Google is seeing it.

I sell a product on clickbank and I'm finding that for every keyword I've ever done SEO for, an extension of my domain with the hop extension his ranking and ranking extremely high. But as I have spent several hundred dollars in SEO to rank this domain, when I do a rank check search in Market Samurai my actual domain (with no extension) isn't even appearing in the first 1000 results. What is ranking, and what is ranking really well is my domain with the hop extension at the end.

XXX is of course an actual affiliate username, however the actual hoplink isn't even set up correctly, so what is happening is this URL extension is opening up my website, but no affiliate data is being tracked. So because this URL isn't even set up properly by a possible affiliate, I'm finding it highly unlikely that a real affiliate and has spent hundreds of dollars on SEO to get this URL ranking. In addition however, I contacted Clickbank and they informed me that an affiliate link should never outrank the domain.

I really don't think people like clicking on a link that looks like an affiliate link, and this isn't even an affiliate link because no affiliate ID is being tracked and it's not set up properly. I have tried to set up a 301 redirect on this URL extension, as it seems that Google it is thinking that this URL extension is the most important page on my website outside of my actual domain itself which is not even ranking in the top 1000 (for competitive and non-competitive keywords).

I feel the reason the redirect did not work is because having the domain set up in Clickbank, anything that has the hop extension will direct to my domain. So I'm really after some advice and a solution for this, because I don't want to continue paying hundreds of dollars on SEO to rank a URL that isn't attractive to click on, plus, it remains in the address bar.

Does anyone have any thoughts and suggestions on this? I need a way to tell Google that they are ranking the wrong page on my domain, as the only thing I can conclude is that Google has seen all of the SEO I have been doing on this domain and is ranking this other URL instead and seeing it as more important.

    Appreciate any replies!

    Yeah this happens sometimes.

Your best option is to just do more SEO to your own site.

I often use this strategy with CPA. Do my own affiliate site and then rank it higher then actual product itself :)

Try writing unique product descriptions or giving affiliates different product descriptions.

I agree.. I was rank 6 or something for the keyword to my site since launch but after some directory submissions, article submissions and link building.. Im PR2 now (jumped from zero) and growing

You definitely need to do more SEO work though because it seems google trusts this link more (possible his was crawled off a higher PR page?)

Make sure you have canonical tags on your pages. This is the Panda update working at its finest. Happened to a few of my work sites, we killed the affiliate IDs and the main domain listing eventually came back.

Would you please explain? Which pages? I've seen this in WP SEO plugins but never understood them.

canonical tags are like 301 redirects but for bots.

if the aff link is site.com/?aff=3424 and the site.com page has a canonical tag of
    Code:
    <link rel="canonical" href="http://site.com" />

than any referral links will be treated as links to the main site instead of the referral url. Any link that loads a page with a canonical tag will only appear in search engines for the canonized url.

hopefully that makes sense. simple concept, tough to word it.

So instead of G thinking there are single links to five different pages (aff1...aff5) it sees five links to one page?

yup. ideally, you should be doing it for all pages.

    Code:
    www.site.com/dir/
    site.com/dir/
    site.com/dir
    www.site.com/dir
    site.com/dir/index.php
    www.site.com/dir/index.php

That one page can be linked many different ways.. canonizing consolidates the link juice.

You have to do more SEO on your site, I think I saw a thread on this site that offers a full SEO package as well for cheap, might want to try that.

Another thing that you can do is talk with the affiliate and see if they will link directly to your site for some fixed amount. You would be surprised what can come out of some friendly emails ;)
