I've had my google places page listen #1 for 3 keywords and it's been a year now. I checked yesterday and i saw my page listed as I 9th on google places locally. I waited until the next day, tried from different IPs and it was still the same. Even the site listing had changed from #1 to #5
My competitors that were not even close to my ranking are now #1 #2. I know for a fact that these people don't know anything about SEO backlinks or other SEO tricks. They never update their site.
You might think i did something wrong. Well i don't use any automated programs, black hat or anything that could compromises my site. I have always submitted comments, articles and directories manually, and i think this is the whitest SEO you can possibly do.

I asked a friend of mine who is also #1 for at least 9 unrelated key words and he said he noticed that Google took pictures from his site and posted them automatically at his business page

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH GOOGLE?
    What am i missing?

Maybe some of your backlinks were demoted. Did you do any updates to your site recently or your robots.txt? Reason I ask is maybe google is seeing duplicate content?

Edit: i just realized you are talking about google places..as far as I know the ranking has to do with how many times it finds your address listed. Perhaps some of the sites listing your have been de-indexed?

Maybe Google did some sort of algorithm update and as dspiel said, some of your backlinks might have been demoted.

I've recently found google places to be extremely unreliable. In my city they cleared everyone's ratings and reset the ranking twice. I'm 3rd but I'm now focusing on trying to rank above the places altogether.

See, when it comes to local listing some factors play a major role like,
    - Geographic location of yur business listing and user
    - Reviews and citations for your business
    - Distance between your buiness listings and city center

If you have your competitors geographically closed to your listing, this may hurt you rankings.

You forgot to give Matt Cutts his payment... and he only accepts one form of payment

    (hint: It's not Paypal)
