Google is buying Groupon, 6 billion dollars. Damn, I thought groupon was a sh*tty idea. Shows what I know. Meanwhile this is googles biggest purchase ever, bigger then youtube. and WHY? Because they are going after local business dollars.
SO my question is this: How is this going to effect local seo? Is Google eventually going to charge for A-G? What's your thoughts?

    6 billion, with a b.

And no, you cannot calculate what is coming. That would be knowing the future. Is your name John Titor?

Local business owners still won't be tech savvy enough (usually) to understand how to use this to their advantage on their own.

It's our job to tell them why they need it, and rank their websites for them ;)

Groupon makes over $500 million annually and according to bloomberg has declined the big G's offer for BILLIONS of dollars. They employ over 1000 workers in a building in Chicago that does nothing but cold call businesses all day long.

Groupon makes lots of money and is still growing. In my opinion it shouldn't affect local SEO at all.

Also, I read an article in the paper and it said that the deal fell through. Groupon realized that they could get more than what was offered. They are steadily growing every year.

By the way, the deal fell through.

Groupon denied the proposition... bad move by Groupon in my opinion, I mean, let's face it... $6 Billion is a lot of money no matter what way you look at it.

Groupon made a very wise business decision.
A very wise long term entrepreneurial relationship
between Google & Groupon will undouptedly allow Groupon to profit from MUCH more that the 6m offer.
If your companys making 5m a year, why the heck would you sell out for 6m.

I think that google use Groupon inside their adwords programs. They fill the empty spaces in search with some ads of their own products, so, they will earn meney when there's no advertisers.

This could be a very bad new for adwords advertsisers...if groupon is profitable, ads will be more and more expensive...

What's to stop google from "coincidentally" releasing another algorithm change that happens to affect groupon type of sites thus dropping all their pages rank to page 100?

what difference would it make if they did that...once u become a groupon member u get email notifications...and if a person comes online looking for groupon.com their ranking in the serps is not gonna matter.

"One-deal-a-day" type of websites do not get their traffic from seo.

Even though you didn't quote me, I'm gonna assume you were talking to me, and even though you didn't use punctuation I'm gonna assume it was a question directed at me.
I don't know anything about Groupon, I assumed they ranked high for any term like xyz coupon, or xyz group discount. Now (thanks to the post below) I understand it's more word of mouth/viral.

    Noted. Thanks.

I read recently that Groupon have an email list of 150 million subscribers to whom they send their daily deals. How can the money NOT be in a list that big?!

Groupon was silly to turn down that deal. Their concept is so ridiculously simple...that anyone can copy it. Google is not just anyone...they can copy it and do it on a much bigger scale. The guys at Groupon are a little too cocky in my opinion....they will not be worth that kind of money when a big fish copies their idea and cannibalizes their available big $ clients.
