Google will start warning web users about deceptive download buttons

Google will start telling web users when they encounter deceptive sites that may try to trick them with misleading ads, the company announced in a blog post today. Now, when Google detects fishy "embedded content," such as an ad that masquerades as a download to steal personal information, Google will warn users with a page declaring a "deceptive site ahead."
The company says the content that will trigger the warning includes anything that tries "to act, or look and feel, like a trusted entity," or that attempts to "trick you into doing something you?d only do for a trusted entity." The plan is part of Google's Safe Browsing program, which was updated in November to flag for similarly suspicious content. Safe Browsing is set on by default for Chrome users.

    Yeah google is cracking down.

For my PPD site all my download button links are nofollow so google should never crawl it and the link is cloaked.

So if google never follows the link then they wont know whats on the other end.

They have had years to improve the quality of the ads they use so its no ones fault but their own.

The thing is people were making money being deceptive in the first place. I think its smart and dumb at the same time, dumb for burning an income niche source to hell and smart for making investors and clients "feel" like Google is improving their quality.

Well, those ads probably convert best and there wasnt the need to improve the ads in any way.
But I guess they will take action now.

I agree. They should have changed "Download Now"

    to

"Download Now - this is the wrong download link for a random piece of software, we're hoping you don't notice"

If you think Google does not follow nofollow links

If you think Google does not use IP addresses that are not associated with Google so that your cloaking is effective, refer to above video.

They will start using non crap ads, porn tube sites are starting to use them finally. A few years ago they had a hamburger(or other food forget which) advertisement and just yesterday I saw an ad that was promoting a product with a political statement.

I have a free software site that's monetized only with adsense.

The only fake download links that appear on there are google ads for pdf readers and what not. Will they block those too?

Somehow I imagine there will be minimal reduction in these spam and misleading ads, and that people who need to make money will simply find the work-arounds. You guys talk as though G lives at your house and shares peanut butter sandwiches with you. The big dogs here know all about legitimate cloaking strategies and activities to mitigate risk to their ad campaigns.

Everything is going to be pretty much the same as it always is, but it may take more work to make campaigns sustainable. That's about it. I hope you folks don't actually somehow think G cares where or how its money gets made. They do care about public perception, but I'm pretty sure they know they serve ads on some of the lowest caliber sites in the world - many of which contain illegal content. Come on G - who you fooling with this pro-active spam elimination crap? A dollar is a dollar, and everyone knows it.
