I'm doing a link building campaign on one of my sites and its really the first time I'm digging in so deep with all the backlinking. I guess I have what some might call a bad habit of checking my position daily. It's starting to drive me INSANE! One day I'm up 40 positions, the next day I'm down 20! It's crazy!

What is your advise? Do you monitor your sites position daily when trying to rank it? Or do you just build, build, build and check it at a certain point? Is this good my site is fluctuating so much? When it drops I panick and want to stop what I'm doing. But I should just keep going with my campaign right?

I wouldn't worry to much. Give your site another 3-4 days and it should level out, google is just trying to figure where to place you and if you still building links this is why you keep dancing. You will probably find you will end up in a higher position.

    Is it a new site?

When I build a new site I layout my link plan for the first three months and do not check any rankings until somewhere around the 2 1/2 month mark. New sites bounce a lot and anything you see in the first three months is smoke anyway so why waste time obsessing over it. For older sites usually once a week.

All that time you spend over your daily rankings fluctuations is wasted time you could spend doing something more productive.

@Volund - yeah good point. The site is 3 months old however I just started building backlinks to it Feb 9th. When I started out it was at position 24, then fell to beyond 300 and not its starting to climb back up sitting somedays at about 80 or so.

I check it every day and it makes me crazy also, because I never know if I built enough links or not. My main url is nowhere to find but sub pages are dancing like crazy for more than month so I hope my main url is not penalized somehow.

did you do a search in google to like this site:hxxp://www.yourdomain.com - if it comes up then you are still in google - I use a tool called sescout - the free version for my current projects because it'll crawl real deep into google like past position 300 LOL - then I also use another tool called backlinks monitor by inspyder flat $49 fee and you can track unlimited urls/keywords - it'll crawl however far out you want it but best to not go past 100

If your main income is from Google traffic, then you tend to check your rankings a lot. It's kind of scary though; because you don't really know what's happening. If your rankings tank, you don't know for sure whether it's a google dance, penalty, or an algorithm change. It's best to diversify, and not to put all your eggs in one basket.

Well when I link build I watch it obsessively, but I continue to build. Steady link velocity does wonders.

Oh this is by no means my main source of income LOL! I learned the HARD WAY not to put all the eggs in the same basket back in 2002 when Yahoo flipped its wig and I lost all my traffic and income on about 80 sites!!

Affiliate marketing is now my 2nd income, never first!

I check my position at least once every hour, when I am awake. Sometimes, I even check it in my dreams. I guess you are doing a lot better than me that way.

Hello no. I've got a plugin that sends me reports nightly of all my sites, for some of my clients the reports are sent weekly. To hell with with hourly lol

Checking your rankings more than once every three days sucks (I do it too) and is usually caused by not having enough websites or projects.
