I have a two month old site which was initally ranking on page 5 for a keyword (not a hugely competitive term) but soon fell to page 12. I've been building some high PR links to try and move it but to no avail.

Then I had a look at www2.sandbox.google.com/ (caffeine) and the site is ranking at number 5.

I know it's early days yet but could caffeine be an update that actually benefits new sites? Or does anyone have another explanation?

i often experience new sites getting very high rankings before disappearing. seems like google is "performance testing" the new stuff and then throws you back into the sandbox... that could be it... who knows

I doubt Google is doing anything to help new sites out. They take insane steps to keep new sites out of page 1 serps and to keep people from cheating their way to the top.

Yeah I was really surprised too. Obviously it's early days yet and one can only keep testing and hoping.

I have another site that im following a similar promotion with. If - when the update is fully rolled out - they both rank well I'll be able to duplicate the method on other sites and maybe even share it here. :)

Caffeine update is equal to the update "Big Daddy" that happened in 2005. Will you remain at position 5 since its in the sandbox area ??? All the sandbox will tell you is that, for that placement to remain google is watching the site activity for development, thats about it
