Hmmm Wonder where they are going with this...

Paying for it with cash to boot.

Put it together.... Skype, Motorola, Android etc.

Sounds like a good move on their part to acquire some of the research knowledge and attempt to compete with the iphone.

Not sure what to make of this acquisition. I imagine it could give them better control over the hardware much like Apple has control over there hardware and that helps the end user experience.

    Google buys Motorola Mobility* ;)

As for the acquisition it is most likely to secure more patents for defensive litigation than an actual interest in the hardware maker.

Coming from mobility background I see many benefits from this should it be approved. Not only the above mentioned but Brand Domination on a broader reach. This gets them into not only top level positions of network providers worldwide but also in the back pockets of EVERY mobility dealer on all networks.

It's all about the patents as Googliath tries to protect Android from Apple and Microsoft's patent trolling exercises. Not good for the industry and this might scare Apple even more as Google becomes a major hardware player. However; I'm not sure Motorola fits their corporate culture!

I kind of want to see Google get shaken up and brought down by antitrust. I think it wouldn't only be good for its SEO ramifications, but I think it would also be good since Google is becoming a big brother-type figure.

I can't wait for new and up coming companies that will have better technology.. oppps.. my bad... someone will buy them for $1b before they are even 6 months into their first year.

Giant Tech Companies... are... interesting... to.. say.. the... least.

+1 If you know anything about litigation between the big tech companies, brrr, it's a chill in the bones how an age old patent on something as broad as 'content aggregation' can become a "valid" basis for a lawsuit.

I really hope patent laws get overturned soon, but until such a time, each big tech company is trying to get there hands on many patents as possible (largely to have a broad enough spectrum of patents to protect themselves from lawsuits).

I'm all for copyright. But software patents are so broad, it's like me going out and patenting the concept of a chair.

    ---

As someone else mentioned, I too am surprised that this acquisition was allowed by anti-trust/anti-competition regulators.
