    Hi Guys,

something happened today, which I do not understand. Maybe one of you guys can help me with that... (and perhaps this is something others have noticed and would like an explanation for)

Before I built my first niche site, I used the google adwords KW tool to check how many searches there were.
At that moment, my main keyword had 200,000+ searches a month. And only 15,000 results in google for exact match! So, I created a site with that keyword in the domain name, and started doing everything to get on the first page.

Now, I'm not on that first page yet, but still working on it. But, that's not the problem; the problem is that, when I check the KW tool again now, my main KW has only 1,300 searches a month !!!
What happened? Can anyone explain this?

    Thanks...

    really depends on the keyword......
i mean if the search term was seasonal or something.....
like earlier this year, during football world cup, there were millions of searchesfor football related keywords but now there will be only fraction of what they were during the world cup

I have been noting this kind of changes for my keywords as well after the keyword tool changes.. But not the difference you had.. Are you sure you had looked for exact match earlier?

Yeah, that's the crazy thing. Exactly the same keyword phrase!
And it's not seasoned at all. It's a very general keyword phrase that should be there forever! :)
I really don't get it. I hope it's just a bug in the program or something (which I strongly doubt or course)

I just went back and ran new keyword analysis on one of my older sites (2008) and was surprised to find that some of the keywords I thought were my top search magnets no longer pull anywhere near the same amount of searches. Don't know if people changed or Google changed. Just goes to show that you can't do your keyword analysis once and just forget about it- you have to periodically check back to verify your original research.

I have also noticed that the google keyword tool does give conflicting data on keywords that are not deemed to be seasonal.

LOL, welcome to the club guys:D You all are now the official members of "fooled-by-google" club. In one of the most surprising move from the company which claims to" do no evil", the search volume of all keyword were reduced drastically.
Some say the new figure is more accurate. but I now believe that Google was inflating the search volume during all these years just to lure Advertizers to buy more PPC ads.

I shared my frustration recently at BHW, check it out here:
    Code:
    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/blackhat-lounge/236710-what-happened-google-keyword-tool-search-volume.html
And don't hesitate in switching over to Wordtracker or some other reliable keyword tool. You never know with Google, maybe they will increase the volume again a few months down the line. After all, they can do whatever they want and get away with it.

depends on the trend movement. because the search volume is average for several months and not only the present month. if the trends are going up you would see a higher number next month, if they are going down you would see a lower number. Sometimes it happens that the search volume is very high in a month and very low in all other months.

Well, after much searching I was able to find an official Google response regarding the above problem. In Google webmaster forums. a Google representative announced that the old search volume showed total of Google searches + Google search partners searches+ some other web properties search. But the new search figure shows just the Google.com search volume.

So, I guess that's the explanation you were looking for. I know its too late for those idiots to do this. but what can we do?

GOogle rolled out a new version of the keyword tool which is more accurate and from the looks of it many keywords have far less volume than they had according to the oplder one

It's been long known that Google keyword tool is unreliable. I used to test the keywords I am going to target by running PPC ads for the exact keywords. Run for approx 2-7 days and you'll roughly know what traffic you can expect

    Hi,

Well, I think they are now showing the true search volume. Or maybe it is all because of google instant?
