I would suggest you don't use a YouTube partner.

I'm at 1358 subscribers and gather roughly 250 000 monetized views.
My RPM when looking at adsense from YouTube is about €4 / 30 days targetting American viewers (over 85%).
This makes for €1000 a month without a partner program, having what I would call a small-sized Youtube channel.

I don't plan on going with a network.. ever, really. I see the exact same (video) ads in the beginning of my video's as most video's.
If there's a benefit to reap, it's very small.

I've read review after review and comparison after comparison and I came to that conclusion.

What you do, is up to you ofc.

Same as above, I wouldn't suggest having a YT partner. It's just headaches and I'm speaking from experience/friends' experience.

If you don't want to be your own boss sure knock yourself out. If you want to be innovative and the sky is the limit then hell no. Of course you could build up your fan base as part of a network but in todays competitive market you don't want to be one of the group. There are dozens of partnership networks for a range of niches they all get told what to publish and when to take that huge commission. Be different and grow your account.

You will definitely need to be in a network if you upload copyright type videos because if you get strikes on your AdSense account then they will blacklist you and you will have to start over again with a brand new account. Finding the right network is tricky though.

I have been apart of 4 different networks and one of them was in the sports niche. PM me if you want some details.
