When I started white hat web design I got business cards made, created a small brochure, looked up local professionals and made notes of which ones had crappy websites (lawyers, dentists, and successful real estate agents are your best bet, although high-end restaurants with bad websites can be good too), and started emailing, cold-calling, and visiting businesses.

With real estate agencies, you can call the agency and offer to do a seminar on setting up your own website, where you'll walk them through the basics of setting up a wordpress site. If you show off a nice demo site, there's bound to be at least 1 or 2 agents in the crowd who will ask if you can do the work for them.

Make sure you're charging enough money to have it be worth your time. I've sold wordpress sites for anywhere between $200 and $20,000(a lot of custom PHP on that one), and really regret the time I spent on the cheap ones (although they did help me build up my portfolio, so not all bad). If you're familiar with setting up hosting, you'll also want to get a reseller account and offer to host the sites you build for an extra $5-$50/month (depending on their tech savvyness).

You can also post your services on craigslist, or find people looking for website services there. There's really no easy answer, and I got out of the business of making websites for other businesses because I hated doing sales.

I don't know where are you from, but where i`m from i see a lot of companies hiring students, young people to go on different ares around the cities, shops, restaurant, different stores, to present them offer about web design, possibilites for ads on facebook etc..
They usually get paid per costumer , something like (fixed sum per customer) + ( 10 - 30 % of the deal ).

I feel that this is an excellent way to do this. Never heard of it before but it really sounds like a win win situation!

I think it is , it can be even more profitabile if you are providing host from an affiliate account, you are actually taking money from both sides.
