I have a reseller hosting account with unlimited features (space, b/w, domains, etc.). I am trying to figure out the best way to monetize it though. The obvious choice would be to set up web hosting but I think the web hosting world is way too saturated and it would be pointless trying to differentiate my services. Another one I've been seeing here is the adult image hosting...I've really been thinking about this but there are a number of obstacles that can pop up from that too (putting ads on, breaking laws). One of the things I've been thinking about is setting up accounts on my server and setting up WP blogs for them loaded with themes and plugins and such, but I wasn't really sure where to advertise this kind of service.

How would you monetize unlimited web space?

you should call it unmetered rather than unlimited, as no server is unlimited obviously. on topic I dont really know how you could monetize it. If you could offer warez hosting people would be all over it. Theyd love a decent alternative to rapidshare.

Yep I meant to say unmetered...Warez would be out of the question but not opposed to image hosting

Installing WHM and selling off cheap hosting would be an option I guess... you can surely find a cracked *ahem* good copy of WHM around here somewhere...

personally i wouldn't do it, it can end up more hassle than what its worth, especially if you are going to run the shop by yourself - i started hosting 8 years ago and made some great $$$ at the start

you will only make good money and get repeat customers if you offer good support

however regardless of how serious you are about it its inevitable you will have problems, server crashes, hardware failure, etc, hackers or hack attacks, etc trust me its not fun if a server goes down and you have 200 plus people pissed and are trying to get hold of you

i stopped taking on new clients 4 years ago, phased out all the dickhead clients i had and stuck with by my repeat reliable customers which now more than pays for the server, the extra income pays for secondary and third servers that we have and that we host our own web clients on and our own projects - i learnt the hard way

Trust me, when you offer cheap hosting you will get all kinds of people uploading stuff to your server who dont give a shit about your or the other people on the server, when you get your IP blacklisted on spamhaus or even worse via an ISP Network like AOL you will know what i am talking about!

if you do decide to do it do it the way you said towards a niche market - and make sure you have excellant support from your provider... good luck either way!
