Facebook and Google to ban fake news sites from receiving ad revenue amid backlash that misinformation influenced election

Google and Facebook will be fighting back against fake news sites amid mounting criticism that misleading information may have influenced the presidential election.

The two tech giants said Monday they’ll ban the phony news sites from using their advertising networks, according to statements from the companies.

"We've been working on an update to our publisher policies and will start prohibiting ads from being placed on misrepresentative content, just as we disallow misrepresentation in our ads policies. Moving forward, we will restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher's content, or the primary purpose of the web property," a Google spokesperson wrote in a statement provided to the Daily News.

Facebook now includes fake news sites in a list of “illegal, misleading or deceptive” content like pornography, weapon sales and scams that are denied ads, according to their updated Audience Network Policy.

The social media giant was under pressure from users to scrub sites that peddle dubious information from their news feeds altogether over speculation they may have misinformed voters.

On Monday, Buzzfeed reported that Facebook employees had formed a clandestine task force to combat the problem.

Some Facebook users took matters in their own hands by circulating a Google document entitled “False, Misleading, Clickbait-y, and Satirical ‘News’ Sources,” to be aware of.

Some of the 140 websites on the list come with a radical ideological slant, like the alt-right Breitbart News Network, while other sites disseminate outright false information, like AmericanNews.com.

While it’s unclear how much fake or misleading sites influenced voters, a Pew Research Center study found that 62% of Americans get their news from social media, a majority of which comes from Facebook.

Last week Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg responded to the condemnation by downplaying the presence of shady sites on news feeds.

“Of all the content on Facebook, more than 99% of what people see is authentic. Only a very small amount is fake news and hoax,” Zuckerberg wrote in a public post on Friday.

Facebook’s revision of their Audience Network Policy follows a similar move by Google, which also announced Monday that it would ban phony news sites from receiving ad revenue.

The Silicon Valley giant also received flack for allowing misinformation to crop up in Google searches.

On Sunday, Mediate reported that a top result from a Google search for “final election vote count 2016” was an article from a site called 70News.com falsely reporting that Trump won both the popular vote and the electoral college.

Spokespersons for Facebook and Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

False or misleading information? He would have to ban all news coming from CNN, ABC and NBC then too.

He has a large task ahead of him. I even see "Sponsored" fake news sites using FB ads platform on a daily basis promoting articles such as "Insert Pro Athlete Here" uses "Insert Supplement Here" and "hasn't been caught yet."

These articles even look like ESPN articles but FB hasn't done anything about them yet. I was actually surprised how easily it was for these articles to circulate using FB's own platform.

I can understand the fake news sites that go viral without FB ads but for them to allow these fake ads through their own advertising platform and now want to stop it, it's amusing to me a little. But I understand where they are coming from.

Have been keenly following this since a while.. Also google, a couple of Macedonian kids were making a few grand per day making up clickbait fake news.. there is a good article on that.

Zuck also said that he doesn't want FB to be the judge of what is fake and what is not and had previously said that it is a "pretty crazy idea" to believe that fake news on FB decided the election.

There is no way to real-time fact check..this PR release must be in all likelihood a response to the alt-left outrage that seems to be making the rounds these days as the blame game for their liberal candidate's failure starts.
    Nothing will change..

How can they potentially fact check stuff in real time ?
Someone makes an article titled "Melania Trump's former modelling manager releases NEW UNSEEN photos. You won't believe this !!"

then who decides it's fake ?

A small media outlet could potentially have found a lead to new pics.. How can they fact check anything.. This is just one example.. other similar stuff could be "You wont belive Obama's birth photo's with his mom from Kenya !! SHOCKING !!"

There are a million spin offs..People need to judge what they can and what they cant believe.. This is just a show to media that see we now have a policy in place..To shut the unrealistic media up who want FB/G to take the mantle of weeding out stuff which can never be weeded out.. I am not sure if I should be angry or laugh at the people who want poor Zuck to deal with something he cant deal with.. Lol..

It's called journalistic freedom..they can't fact check it.. what if someone actually has proof of the athlete using whatever it is they claim.. I know its false..but Zuck/FB has no legal apparatus to look into it..
    Unrealistic garbage..

First of all, I read that title as "Good luck with that, Fuck!" I was like "Omg who pissed off BTB?!"

Second, I'm also amused bc these fake news sites have been generating revenue for both FB and G. But now that they've been tried in the court of public opinion, they suddenly want to do something about it.

Third, taking out these fake news sites isn't going to be as easy as they think it is. So yeah, totally good luck with that. Jackasses.

Lastly, I am eating pizza for breakfast. And it is amazing.

What I'm talking about isn't journalistic freedom, it's a blatant ripoff and scam news article. I understand your other points you mentioned.

But with my point, there are sites who look just like ESPN and even uses ESPN's logo. They make up a news story about Tom Brady, for example taking a banned supplement to better his stats or something like that, they post this fake news story to make it appear that ESPN covered the story when it wasn't a story broken by them.

They use FB ads to circulate this fake story that IS fake and we all know it's fake. That's what I'm saying. This happens a lot on FB. And Tom Brady may actually be taking a banned supplement for all I know, the fake part and the loss of journalistic freedom goes out the window when a news site is deliberately trying to mislead someone and for the most part, we know they are trying to mislead us by even faking like they are ESPN for example.

It's one thing for some news agency to write a story and we can't fact check right away on that story. It's another thing when a news agency acts like they're Fox News when they aren't and completely uses their brand to try and pull a fast one. That's what I'm talking about.

I'm amazed that these ads even go through and get approved. I've seen stories such as these be shared 100k+ times. And they're labeled "Sponsored" by Facebook. That's what puzzling to me because Zuck has contributed directly to what he's trying to stop now.

If you win, it's thanks to your "real news".

If you lose, it's because of their "fake news".

Sleepless nights in the propaganda headquarters as the "real news" tries to convince us that their "truth" is the only one.

Sorry if my comment was not articulated well.. I didn't say your points are unrealistic garbage.. I meant the alt-left's "DEMAND" that FB/G clamp down on this is garbage. They can't...there is just no way to do so.

The thing is what do you define as a proper News Outlet ? There may be a fringe news outlet which hires journalists... I know that the examples you cite are outrightly fake.. but FB doesn't and will not (as it is not financially viable) hire humans to look into this.. There is no way a bot can make out what is and what is not false.

In a perfect world, there would be no such thing. Unfortunately we dont live in a perfect world...and i dont see this changing.. Call it journalistic freedom, call it freedom of speech, call it whatever... they have no legal right to clamp down on this..only ESPN/Tom Brady/whoever it is that is being misrepresented/maligned have a legal right to file suit against that website..which they will never do as the guy lives in another country and filing suit and pursing it will cost more than any potential financial damages that can perhaps be squeezed out of the 15 yr old kid faking news and being stupid enough to tell people about it and not anonymyzing it via BTC payout, offshore hosting, Tor, etc..

The story was in today's paper but they approved one of my fake news sites on Monday for an ad so maybe if I just keep that running I can be grandfathered in.

It did take longer than usual to get approved but I thought it was because I set it up on Sunday and they are short staffed on the weekend or maybe it was because someone was making sure it was "real" news and just didn't look hard enough.

I'll do a different one in the same niche next Monday and see what happens.
