Hey guys, first post here !

I'm a pretty good developer (just quit my day job in an algo trading firm) and I'd like to get into the business of making/monetising a site now I have some spare time.
I never made more than toy projects on the web but I should be able to learn the technical side quickly.
Also I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to making money on Internet.

My first naive idea would be to make a site like xvideos (a personal favourite of mine) and start it by automating the ripping of videos and comments from already established sites.
Then learn the seo/linking side of things and get it out there. I imagine I'd automate all that on virtual machines I'll rent.

    Few questions:
    1) How is it a bad idea actually ? Am I likely to get sued by the studios/xvideos like sites when my site gets famous ?
    2) Is porn copyrightable ? I read somewhere that it's not because it's obscene ? But it's probably wrong I imagine ?
    3) If it's a bad idea, what other strategies/website types should I investigate to leverage my programming skills ? I'm not looking to be spoon fed, just given some directions to investigate. I've read a ton of great ideas on this site, but I'm not sure which ones would be most appropriate for me.

    Thanks!

I don't think its gonna be easy for you to get your porn tube site really profitable.
The competition is pretty huge and the budgets behind those sites are tremendous! not saying that it's impossible, it will be pretty hard though and there will be no guarantee that you're invested time & money will pay off ;)

If you are doing that kind of stuff, I would probably be looking into smaller niches and then build a tube site around it. However - I personally am not the biggest fan of porn and porn sites, the competition is just too crass.

Since you are a good coder how bout leveraging THOSE skills since there are not that many marketers out there havin worked in an algo trading firm before so that would be definitely something that you can make good $ of it...

Ok, not really an answer to my questions but that's encouraging.
What's your background Iota ? (I'm still 13 posts away from PMs)
You might be able to PM me in 1 post (you're at 14)

    Jaykub,

    Thanks for the feedback!
Where exactly will I need to spend money to create a xvideos like website ? I can't visualize it.
Hosting ? Surely I can start small and scale when needed
Getting content ? I plan on ripping all off
Coding ? Yeah I'll do it myself
SEO ? Ok I'm not sure about that ?

Also, I am making a very naive tube site right now following this tutorial (sorry can't post links yet, but it uses pimproll). It's just to get my hands 'dirty', I expect to make next to nothing with it.

Alot of the costs are in traffic.

Hosting isn't alot when you start small when you have a normal website. But hosting scraped videos and doing so at a hgih speed(nobody wants a slow video) costs more than normal websites.
Do you do graphis also, or do you plan to spend money on graphics.
SEO is 50-50. you can do some yourself, but your not nearly as good as people who have been doing it 5+ years.

And my background is in more desktop apps, I would be interested in making the scraping if you do the website :)
