So, My Cousin and I are very passionate about building computers, mostly gaming computers even though we don't game... we like them because they are faster, have more space and memory, and run smoother as well as cooler than most computers.
So I am NOT promoting here, but our last name is phillips so i was thinking of buying the domain
    phillipspc.com

and failed... so i decided. who the hell would buy that domain lol.

well you guys should visit .. actually ill just post a pic. but it is a one page site. has nothing saying what it does or anything. just a big picture.
was wondering if you guys thought this had anything to do with blackhat or some kinda IM?

oh.. decided not to post the pic. sorry

So are you actually opening a physical store or just a website?

If it is just a website, your going to have a pretty tough time for IM. I would start by getting good posts in Craigslist. Try and find some PVAs in semi-remote areas such as citys in North Dakota or a similar state, as these people probably don't have regular access to places like Wal-Mart or Radio Shack.

Then I'd go with some off-line marketing, such as shipping your computers with company mouse pads & stickers & whatnot. I had a friend that was pretty successful in selling "tobacco" pipes through an affiliate program by putting up bumper stickers on the doors of public bathroom stalls. I'd try a similar approach with the latest PC game to capture the kid's attention & put your website name on the bottom. We figured he got around 10 customers a day from doing this at a mall.

Just think about where teenagers go, online or offline, and advertise wherever possible. I'd like to hear how successful the custom PC business can be today. I wanted to start one ever since I was a kid but by the time that I got old enough, the prices of brand name PCs dropped so much it just didn't seem profitable anymore.

I wish you all the luck man, however, computers are a commodity now and pretty much dominated by the likes of Dell, Gateway, HP, so thats gonna be tough.

right now im building the website, but im not gonna use it just yet. im doing local advertising on CL and tomorrow i have to go to the mall so im gonna have someone there print out some stickers and place them in random yet trafficked areas. with just a number... or maybe my email. idk. i have had 2 customers so far and it went well. i only profited 100 from each transaction. but still thats 200 bucks for me spending 500. so, it does well.

when i get my site up. i will surely do some online advertising b ut i want to be able to have that money first.

Well that's how Michael Dell became a billionaire.

building computers and selling them locally

i think you should rethink your strategy though.

Gear freaks like to build their own computers anyway, and are savvy enough to order their parts online.

The kiddos would love your product, but most don't have 2 grand lying around to buy them.

The business people don't know anything about computers, and just go to BestBuy or Frys to buy theirs.

I think, if you were going to start an actual brick and mortar regional business, i'd get into local IT work.

e.g. get 10 contracts for 10 different small offices and you will be there 'on call IT guy'

i think you'd have a tough go selling custom built gamer PC's though...

You might want to read Michael Dell's story and then decide. But the market was a LOT different in those days.

Even Michael Dell turned down Microsoft's initial offer to be the X Box manufacturer. - moral of the story, low profit in game machines.

much more profit in the games themselves.

Hey, I was an IT tech for several years, and let me tell you right now that there is no money in building custom pc's. We were doing it for a while, but warranty service kills any hope for profit.

We eventually went to becoming a Dell reseller since all we had to do was schedule a Dell warranty tech to come out and do the work.

The very second one of your PC's break on a customer, you are screwed on that sale.

If you want to start your own PC business, I would do house calls.

heres another form of advertisement you could use...create a facebook group and invite all your friends and tell them to invite their friends friends.

and maybe u can offer other services such as repair, or upgrades etc.
