This sucks in more ways than you can ever imagine.

I just got this error message VIA Gmail after clicking the link to delete the spam messages in my spam folder.

Gmail by Google Unusual Usage - Account Temporarily Locked Down

To keep our systems healthy, Google has temporarily disabled your account. This primarily occurs when we detect unusually high levels of activity on your account. In most cases, it should take one hour to regain access. In rare cases, it can take up to 24 hours for access to be reinstated.

    We?re sorry for the inconvenience.

Here are some reasons why this could have happened:

Receiving, deleting, or downloading large amounts of mail via POP or IMAP in a short period of time.
Sending a large number of messages to many people.
Being logged into or synchronizing Gmail on many computers, clients, or mobile devices.
Browser-related issues. If you find your browser continually reloading while attempting to access your Inbox, it?s probably a browser issue, and it may be necessary to clear your browser?s cache and cookies.
Providing access to file-sharing, file-storage software, email analytics services, browser extensions, or third party software that automatically logs in to your Gmail account.

For more help troubleshooting this issue, click here. For Google Apps users, please contact your administrator if you have any further issues.

I've had this account since 2005 and have never had an issue with the exception of receiving spam.

I typically receive about four hundred and fifty to six hundred spam emails per day but it has been like that since I've had it.
As it stands, this is my primary email account and I'm locked out. :rocketwho

All of my sales confirmations, customer service alerts, etc., come through this account and once a client clicks submit, the clock starts ticking.

I cannot contact Gmail and they offer users with no way to figure out what is wrong or what went wrong. These azz wipes simply lockout the account with no warning, alert or notice.

Needless to say, this is a wake up call for me. I stopped using Google search last year and I also cut out Google Analytics and GWT and now I'm going to squash Gmail.

Anyone [successfully using] an email client aside from Outlook, that you can intelligently recommend?

Delete your cookies and try to log in again. I had that a week ago.

You could create also create a backup account on hotmail/yahoo/whatever and forward all your emails there as a copy in case this ever happens again (assuming you get your account back).

Been there and done that! Cleared cookies, LSOs, and cache and still NADA.

I've had a couple people mention Thunderbird and it seems like that might be my option. Is anyone else using Thunderbird and have been for a while?

Honestly, I don't know why anyone has a Gmail account...

Thunderbird is like opensource Outlook, it's neither good or bad, it just does it's job :)

Thunderbird is nice. For Mac, I like the Sparrow App. There is another one for both Mac and Windows: PostBox. I really, really liked that when I used it (after that, switched to Sparrow for speed!).

As someone else said, forward all your e-mails to some other place as well. You can also use backupify to backup your gmail accounts. We use it for our entire team just in case something goes wrong.

Google doesn't have any support at all, not even for their Google apps section.

    EDIT: Here's a link to PostBox: http://www.postbox-inc.com/

Don't use gmail - I had an account terminated for 'spam activity' about a year and a half ago, sure I used it for some sign-ups but nothing major. So everything else I had in that account I lost completely - I learnt my lesson to never trust the big G with my data ever again as they are too keen to take a machete to it.

Unfortunately, I have to quickly sift through it because their spam filters are known to tag email addresses that you have whitelisted as being spam.

I've got about another fifteen minutes are so before I find out if this is just a one hour lockout but I can tell you this, I'm going to break away from Gmail and that you can bank on.

Google punished you cause you don't use their other products! lol

Probably you send more than 500 emails / day that they have as a safe limit?

If you keep logging on to Google and doing spammy things on your IP, they will just do things like that.

Hope you get access to your account restored soon.

Wake up call for everyone - Stay away from Google products but search (because that's what most your prospective clients use to search) :p

[UPDATE] Ijust got access restored but I'm not a happy camper! My mood with Google can be best described as LIVID!

    :soapbox:

After going through a process of elimination, nothing stands out. I don't use this account to do any type of mass emailing of any sort. I don't log into multiple accounts. I don't use it to engage in anything dodgy or shady. That is why it was baffling when it happened.

I only log on to this Gmail with 1 IP and I like I stated previously, I don't use any other Google services. If I go to YouTube, I do it anonymously through another machine using HMA VPN and Open DNS.

This definitely was a wake up call.

I just downloaded Thunderbird and hopefully I'll get a chance to get it set up by this Friday.

For you Thunderbird users, can you auto sync Thunderbird to two or three computers?

I think you should wait for atleast 24 hours and hopefully your account will get resumed.
