Hi I know I am not the best contributor and I just want to apologize because I need some help. I need to track down the ip address of a gmail user and all that is in the header is a local ip. Is there a way to track this email to the real ip address?

The ip address in the header is the ip of where he sent the email from. Could be a proxy or could be his real ip.

I think it's google's ip. That is the problem, when you trace it back to Mountain View it does not help me much. I have read that gmail only logs the ip address when you sign up for that email account. That sounds like bs, I assume they have all your ips. I will have a lawyer petition the isp, however I need to find out where this is to get an isp I guess.

Sorry, skipped over the part where you mentioned it's gmail. As you said you wont find the originating ip in an email sent from a gmail account.
