Am I the only one who gets uncomfortable when a somewhat sketchy cpa offer company needs my tax id and social security number. I know it's needed for tax purposes but still, I have hesitated to sign up for a few offers I was interested in strictly because they need my social and I don't want to give it to them. Am I being paranoid or is it good to be cautious here?

Register an LLC. In costs less than $150 bucks and then you don't have to give out your SS#.

I agree with enigmatix, get an LLC and protect your identity.

Mostly all CPA network don't have SSL security lock.. so stay away from the periods only choose the ones that have lock on top left hand corner that means they legit cause if a company don't have that. Which means they don't care about you or they too poor to afford SSL Security per month..i read something about Ein

I only operate under an LLC and would never do business with a sketch CPA network and neither should you.

Most sites have lousy security so you are smart to be cautious.

People pay attention to ssl certificates but that only encrypts the connection, not the data stored on the server which is the real risk.

    Here is a simple test:

Go to the site and enter a fake SSN. Then try to edit your information. If the SSN is displayed then it's a 99% chance that it is stored in clear text on the server.

If it's stored as clear text on the server you have no protection when the site is hacked and the database is stolen.

If you're in the US, they need it for reporting your earnings to the IRS. It's a 1099 form, which is basically a W-2 for self employed people. You will get a copy for reporting. Some have tried to skip doing it, and it turned out to be costly for them. You're going to find it pretty hard to find anyone who doesn't require it.

Here is what I do. I give them a fake SSN to start, then if you earn lots of money, give them your real SSN.

Its always good to have an SSL from the start that shows they legit. I understand they need for tax purposes but still have some respect to affiliates u know and yeah your right when u try to edit the info if no lock is shown that means your shit is open for anyone to see. Hackers are always on the lookout for weak shit like that. Beware...you can always get an EIN i heard its better then a SSN# and safer to hand out..but i like the ones that no in US that don't ask for it and still have SSL for basic info..send the cash by paypal the end of the year i'll do my own taxes..its simple just print out the spread sheet of all your earnings and bam.. the thing is you will end up oweing but i mean from what u make that should n't metter. so to all the ppl that don't know about SSL and blast SSN like crazy cross your fingers.
