Anyone know how to get ghost traffic off your site?

The past few days I'm noticing random boosts in traffic my sites serving is picking up on, that isn't coming from search or anything. My guess is referal spam. Is there a fix for it?

    Thanks

Usually I block it using .htaccess. This is the most simple method that I know.

Anyone know if this can have an effect on rankings? Apparently my host provider doesn't give access to the http files so I can't block these ghost referrals. I also wonder if this is negative SEO or simply some scummy spam company that does this to tons of sites.

Get a CloudFlare account, increase security settings, add an automatic captcha and block an IP block or country if they are all coming from a similar place.
