Forums are hard to start. Get some content first otherwise no one will sign up. And probably some fake stats as well. Thats the only way I have done it in the past.

An option you could use to get the ball rolling is using Postloop.com. You can have people posting on your forums to give it some activity even if it's fake, could help convince real users to join. Just make sure you're getting enough traffic to convert visitors into regulars with it.

I was thinking about fakes too. This way the posts get indexed by different users about useful topics that encourage new traffic to sign up. Any other ideas?

Attracting people in once the forum looks good enough for them to join depends on the people. Have you researched the market, found out where they are currently congregating, identified key players in the space?

What is an Advertorial Buyer? Do you work with leads? You sound like you know what you are talking about but I don't know how this differs from a media buyer.

I'm a freelance media buyer who specializes in advertorial or sponsored posts. I also buy links and banner ads, and set up social (getting bloggers to do shoutouts on Twitter and Facebook, reposting infographics, vids, and podcasts, that sort of thing). Advertorial (sponsored posts) is the biggest part of it though so I picked that for the name.

Here is what you need to do to get started.
First of all, you need to pay members to sign up and start posting in your forum.
There are few website which allows you to advertise your forum...
After some members join and start making posts, your forum will be automatically exposed and you will get members.
Forums are always hard to get start with + don't ignore the spammers, they can spam your forum to death, install some anti spam plugins etc. :)

Thanks for all your replies! Back in time I had a forum which got spammed after just 2 days... How do I prevent that to the maximum?

#1 PostLoop. You pay for users to post.
#2 Create false identities and respond to yourself as them. Make sure to create banners or levels like "founding member", "donor", and others to provide incentive for real people to join.
#3 Create a blog that will help index and drive traffic to your forum, using the forum's domain.

i have not personally made my own forum yet but these seem like they would help jump start real users.

Agree that starting a forum isn't an easy task, but its definitely doable.

Fake it till you make it. Start with quality content and then create "conversation" between members. Do it yourself or if you have capital use postloop.com.

Or you can reach some expert on your niche (find them in other forum/blog), ask them to become contributor in exchange of some reward. Can be money, gift or just an Elite Member tag.

You can also create a referral contest. One who bring most member will get reward. Cheap physical product will work great, such as bracelet, hat, tshirt, amazon giftcard etc

My 2c, hope this help. Good luck with your forum :)

You can try using PostLoop.com to get it started. Forums are hard work though.
