    Hey everyone!

I have a problem (I guess). 5-6 days ago I noticed that my WordPress website is getting shitloads of new users! It's probably just spam, since 90% of the e-mail addresses looks like this xx.xxxx.xx.xxx@domain.com

Should I remove those accounts or? I just don't understand why would someone do it. They don't comment or anything...so that's kinda odd. I recently had my website's forums spammed (over 10k posts in 2 weeks) so I had to remove it. I just don't get why would someone do this without commenting or something, is there any other intention?

    Thanks!

Do you apply e-mail verification after the registration process? It works for me in preventing those spammers come to my site or you just want to try Human Verification Code during the registration.

try to add captcha on your site registration. Forgot the plugin name.

Edit: Do you have akismet too?

If you have a commercial site it might be best to add sms verification. Each registrant received a sms with a code to enter during registration.

Could be from some of the very services people use here haha. Depending on your niche, but since you said no one comments, I truly don't know. Maybe someone thinks they're helping you out?

    Thanks for the answers!

Well, I have a sports website (NBA News), and yes, I have Akismet enabled. I don't have CAPTCHA, but they do need to open their e-mail and confirm the registration. Since I posted this, I've received over 30 registration...kinda WTF situation.

But yeah, I'll add CAPTCHA then. Thanks for the help!

EDIT : Getting 10 registrations per a minute now - wtf!? And there are only 15 people on the website...

Just installed the CAPTCHA addon and STILL getting them...now it's even 15 registrations a minute. I had 350 users before this, and I have over 700 right now, which I got over the last few hours. This is damn annoying! Should I just close registrations? It seems that whoever is doing this has a CAPTCHA solver or something.

Just close the registration, and after they classify your site as "fail registration site" they will delete it on their "registration list".

Note that wordpress makes pages for authors, and they can leave their link their if you have a custom author.php in your theme.

If it's just random bots lurking around mass creating accounts for future use - it's one thing.
If this is someone of your competitors or just people that don't like you - it's a whole different story.
Anyways I would start with custom modification of your signup page adding some aditional virification (JS) there. There are plenty available. Though you might need some skills to do that.
Dont' trust captcha too much. It's only a buck for 1000 nowadays to solve.
But if it's someone doing that personally just to annoy you, I would close registration for a while.

Well, I am using an Image CAPTCHA...and I don't have that author page. I mean, there is a page, but only for authors, not for subscribers (which is a default rank new users get).

I guess I will just close it for a while...I'm kinda afraid, to be honest. This is my first "big" website, and I've never dealt with such things before, so I'm kinda in a panic mode lol. Thanks to everyone for willing to help me out!

No worries my friend, since you say these accounts aren't actually contributing anything, it's very likely a competitor/ignorant friend/bored kid with too much time.
Take this time to gather the advice, compose yourself and launch a more secure registration system. All downhill from there Aspe.

You can try changing default registration page. Make it domain.com/NewUser.php or something like that.

You can use this WP plugin: CM E-Mail Blacklist
There you can input domain name which will be forbidden to create an account on your site.

Thanks for it! However, I find no use of it for now, since I'm also getting crappy registrations from hotmail.com, gmail.com etc.

I use WangGuard for one of my WordPress sites and it works pretty good. Still get some spammers but a lot less. There might be something better then WangGuard, but I'm not sure. Probably just have to look around and/or just test different security methods.

As far as forums registrations go, I ran a short lived forum and had TONS of spam registrations, tried many different plugins, but actually was able to solve it by just adding a security question like " Who's the current president of the United States?".
