I've got a question for anyone who has actually succeeded at this. How do you build a substantial list of real people who actually care...

That's what I've struggle with... I've made a lot of money getting leads and selling financial products as a financial advisor. Very niche work. I still do it on the side but I've been moving towards doing IM. I've been throwing money at my education.

My point is, I don't know how to get people to give a damn.

I have been extremely successful at getting high up on google for my niche, getting leads, talking to the people who are interested right when they are interested.

But I get either people who buy, or people who don't. I have a list of thousands of people who signed up and I can't get anything out of them. They really don't seem to care.

I'm just wondering what others have done to build lists of people who actually care about what they have to say, build interaction, that kind of stuff and what you recommend.

If the people signing up are not interacting then it could be your traffic does not match your niche.

    Couple of thoughts:
    1. A smaller list of responsive buyers is better than a list of thousands that are not looking for your stuff
    2. Are your emails getting read?
    3. Run a survey of how YOU can be of service to your list
    4. Find a positive way to trim out those that dont use the survey, or market to them differently (build a new avatar if that is your focal point)
    5. JV with someone that has a non-competing product in same/similar niche

    Goodluck!

Do you have an auto-responder sequence for when new people sign up to your list? This is a great way to build a relationship with your subscribers and 'ease' into sales rather than blatant selling from the start.

Lots of good answers so far. Traffic doesn't match niche is first thought. Otherwise you're doing something wrong on the relationship building side. Using really good opt-in bait but not having anything to follow up with is another problem. You have lots of options though. Survey them to see what they want. Consider renting or selling your list, no harm if they're not making you money and not interacting with you.
