I want to help my father's business and make him rank first for:

    "photographe montreal"

This search term gets about 4500 monthly local, but I'm afraid the traffic for organic results is not that good because there is alot of ads and local area business results.

So I was wondering, how do you get in the local area business list? Do you have to pay some fees, or do you register for free and Google juges which one should be displayed first. And if so, how can I be displayed on the first page?

It is free. You just google search "google locals" it will give you the link.

As for the listing being number 1, you should be able to do it pretty easily with a couple reviews. The competition for your search term is not very difficult. It will take a couple of weeks for google to accept the listing and put it up there, then you can just start leaving reviews. Yelp is a good place to leave reviews.

Do you suggest leaving fake reviews? Because I can ask him to ask his clients to write quick reviews and post it after.

I would have real reviews if you can. If not then yes post fake reviews, from different accounts with different IP addresses and after you clear your history. If you do the fake reviews you have to make google think that it is another person, a real person leaving the review.

Nuz, I sent you a PM, but I don't know if it went through or not as I'm not sure if I have PM capabilities yet with my relatively new account. If you didn't get it, PM me with a way to contact you, I want to see if you're interested in doing a few review exchanges?

On that note, fvcktheworld (great name, BTW), does it look suspicious if the reviews are being posted by IP's not in the particular business's general geographical location? I've wondered about that for a while, and you seem like the person to know it!

    Thanks in advance guys!

Create a half dozen or more simple videos (talk about what you offer ex: services, specialties etc) with titling your keywords in title and give description and upload to several video hosting sites.

What's the point of those videos? Asking them to make reviews? Or just traffic?

I'm fairly new to this as well, but I am pretty certain they mean just to create more juice and linking to your Business Page. The more the merrier when it comes to G and that sort of thing...

Google wants you to fill out the profile. The more you fill it out with info, photos and videos the better you rank

Fill additional information with keyword rich content while submitting to google local.
    ex.
    Photography in Montreal : Yes
    Best Photographer: Yes
    Cool photography: Yes
    Area Served: Montreal, Canada
    etc.

Check others listing for that keyword and find from which websites they have got reviews. Submit your website to those websites too and write some reviews there too.

Add your listing in other website mentioned below with same information particularly
Business Name, Address & Phone No
