I want to use WP for my website. But I dont want it looking like a blog. Not to much like a blog anyway.
I want to be able to put posts at paces where i choose them to be.

Like one post i want to always be on top. Another i want to always be number 2 and so on.

    How can I do this?
Anyone got any good examples of what I need to do?

    Many thanks in advance

Many of the premium themes will work for this too. Manipulate them some for like those posts you want to stay on top type of deal [like in the template it may say cat id=2 and that is where the posts from that category get posted, then just setup the category and make a post to that category only. It will display there until you need another post to replace it]. There is so much you can do with it. So much fun!

check out this site as an example:

    Code:

it's not my site, but I know the guy that did it. It's all wordpress. He used the theme limau-orange to create the look. Like the others said, it's all in how you pick and arrange your theme.

you can also google "free magazine template wordpress" or something along those lines and get some premium type templates like shylesson was talking about. 2 that I have are Branford Magazine and Mimbo. Worth taking a look.

from there, it's just customizing. If you go with a standard - non magazine theme, then just create a new Wordpress page as your homepage and then under >Settings > Reading >> in WP, you can make that a static page that will become your "homepage"

If you use a magazine theme, then it's kind of already done for you via the options you choose with the theme.

    Hope this helps.

    Laffe,

frankly I use wordpress for everything and all the websites I have made for my corporate clients are also made with wordpress. Its frankly all in the design and special page templates, and the only plugin that I really ever need is Advanced Category Excluder, it does exactly as the name says.

Unfortunately under no circumstance can I mention the names of my clients or their websites. But if you do need any help in the process of creating or modifying a theme you can post it here and I'll be glad to direct you.

    Cheers!!

I'd consider checking out some of the premium WordPress themes that are out there. WordPress, as the person above said, can be used for almost anything.

it doesnt even need to be a premium theme.

    Check http://www.wptrends.com

Here i modifed the "page" template for the free flexibility theme that for each PAGE there is no menus and archives entries on the site, see
    http://www.wptrends.com/about

I also usually don't display more than 4 entries on one site, otherwise it looks too "blog like". Usually i make PAGES if i want to havea landing page for PPC within a blog, but also for things like "contact us", "privacy policy" and similar.

And yes, WP has an option make posts sticky.

I recommend you remove the sidebar and use pages since they are static it will make it look like a website not a blog

You should install a CMS (Content managing system) like joomla or php nuke or drupal etc. They are much better for this type of thing.

Something I found works for me is to copy the categories php, make it into a page template and then use the page title to filter the posts by category. Combine with post stickiness and you have a reasonable cms right there.

Also, in setting you can change it so the homepage isn't the posts but is just a wp-page, so you can have a static homepage. Not quite what you wanted to do but might be helpful

It's all about the theme.... Just remove all the footprints...:) It's really that easy.. edit the theme to do this.. The footprints are out there in black and white.. Remove links to wordpress.. remove internal link categories... Remove the "Blog Archive" from the title of posts. There about 10-20 footprints you need to remove.
