    Hey y'all,

I had the idea that getting my client's company (or website) up on Wikipedia would probably be a really good thing.

So are there any suggestions or pointers for how I might be able to do this successfully? What are the rules and requirements to get this done?

Do small businesses that have been around for like 15 years with 11 year old websites meet that ya think? Those guidelines are VERY vague.

And are there ANY ways of maximizing your odds of getting approved? It feels like there has to be some tricks that could help otu there somewhere.

Anybody else have any ideas on this? I'm going to have to give it a shot regardless, so if any of you have any advice whatsoever it would be very helpful.

    Thx ;)

Use the "art of making things seem bigger and more important than they really are." aka - HYPE!

I think that is doable, I'll just have to research all the impressive possible connections or historical facts around them and try to make it seem like a community cornerstone.

Facts would work. But, if your business is local or not really well known, you can say anything really (as long as it doesn't have anything to do with first contact with mars or something). The mods are unlikely to check that sort of thing, especially if it's not easy. Some politician (blanking on the name) had his page say he had assassinated someone for quite a while before it was finally noticed by a mod and removed. Just use a proxy, because, if you are ever found out, it may make it difficult to use the tactic again later on.

Very good advice, I thank you for the help there. Would hidemyass.com be OK for a proxy, or will I need something even beefier?

It is likely that many proxies will be blocked because other people have used the same tactic (not necessarily for marketing, lots of people vandalize Wikipedia for fun), but Mods are not likely to track you beyond any proxy, so as long as you mask your IP somehow, you should be OK.

I have had some success with one of my customers. If the site looks like it is selling stuff then it will come down. If the site looks informational then it will stick.

If you can't get the company into Wikipedia, try an article about the founder.
He is a entrepreneur, adventurer or philanthropist, I understand. ;-) And if he's not, make him one but don't overdo it.

These are all really good ideas and advice, thanks and reps to all of you.

I think I just need to try to figure out an angle for the business, it's owner, or one of it's "famous" employees and see if I can't poke a hole through wikipedia's defenses that way. Right now I'm lucky though cause we haven't built the ecommerce wing of the site yet so it won't look like it's selling stuff yet and by the time it does it will already be up on wikipedia hopefully.
