Will ranking for my keywords even help with a forum. I mean help as in get active members. Traffic is one thing but I'm not sure how to get my forum active. Right now I'm targeting 8 good keywords and I'm ranking between 50 - 250. So no traffic from Google yet but I'm working on it. Does SE traffic convert well for active members on a forum?

Sure SE traffic is good for a search engine, but you really shouldn't "force" the rankings too early. If potential members come across your website in the search results, and there's nothing going on at the forums why would they want to sign up and participate.

My recommendation is outsource the initial posts on your forum, create fake engagement, be active in the community on similar blogs and link to your "posts" on the forum that could be helpful to those blog posts.

Either way, you need to fake it till you make it, especially with forums.

    superlinks has good advice.

but as long as you are providing good content and interesting avenues for discussion then for sure interested people will sign up and participate. but you have to have engaging content first.

and remember to keep it small at first. no one wants to join a forum with twenty different forums with 5 threads in each.

Well the thing is, it was active before so it has a lot of content. But it's no longer active. I got a friend to help me and we are registering a lot of account and making a lot of posts replying to ourselves and stuff.

well that might help. But targetting ordinary staright forward keywords will give you lot of bot visitors only.So try to rank for long tail keywords that humans search this will help.

Otherwise you are going to talk with bots.

I see sites like this all the time, drowning because people don't know what they have nor what they are doing. A forum isn't just another website, they are social networking/community sites.

Start researching how they work and get dug in. Prepare for a time consuming process of building it slowly and target your traffic by what you post on and who is interested in that content.

    Best of luck with it.

Yeah, unfortunately that is the case with most forums, as people neglect them or load them with too many general download posts, etc.

Before you know it, you have another download site instead of a forum in any form at all. Once the bots have you on their lists, they don't go away either...it is an issue for the life of the site.

This is extremely annoying for users and tends to run them off when they see this style of traffic issue, as they don't want to be bothered.

you will start tpo get traffic for your main terms.

you need to get some traffic and then maximise everything you get.

make sure you install analytics and when you do get some traffic find out what keywords sent that traffic and if you are not #1 for that keyword then make a thread specifically for that keyword.

then build a fewlinks to that thread (its probably going to be a long tail term to begin with)

    rinse repeat.

eventually your link building around your main keywords will work but you need to concentrate on your long tail stuff to begin with.

i have a forum with about 70k uniques per month and thats how i got it there.

Thanks everyone. I'm working out deals with YouTubers who need sponsors now and I've launched a contest. Seems to be getting steady traffic now. And some activity.
