ive done media buying.. you gotta make sure you have some $ as a safety net. It would make sense if you are pushing your own product though; at least you have the potential to up/down sell them.
yes, if you are in the black with a media buy, you can scale, but eventually it comes down to a marginal utility where your creatives dont work anymore and you have to re-test.. which cost money to experiment.
i think this is actually worse with standard display where cpm's are low BUT it can run really quickly. Imagine pushing a 0.50 cents cpm on a 6$ cpa..
I am willing to entertain a discussion on whether buying ads for a fb page makes sense or not. I am uncertain whether the lifetime value of a fan outranks the lifetime value of an email signup
