WANT TO EARN MONEY PLAYING ONLINE POKER? ASK A POKER "PRO"!

Hey everyone! My name is Patrick (callmelucid).

I am fairly new here but want to get to know people and build my reputation a bit. I encourage all of you to ask me questions about how to make money online playing poker!

    About Me:

I was amazed at how much money can be made playing poker. I do a bunch of things for a living now but when I first started out making money online, I scraped by teaching myself to play poker. I have been reading BHW for a while now but have recently decided to make an account to "give back" to you guys who have helped me so much. Since this is a site on making money online i figure why not help people out at what i am good at.

You can find me playing a variety of levels and games at a few of the major poker sites online but my recent accomplishment was bringing my PokerStars account from $0-$1000 in one month! I am currently writing an e-book on my method but I am free to answer questions about anything poker related including my recent cash game success, sit-n-gos, etc.

    ASK AWAY!

What type of game do you play? Multi-table tournaments, sng's, or cash tables? No limit or limt?

there are a few things to keep in mind.

i think for beginners the most important things are hand selection and position.

you are going to want to do most of your raising from late position and hardly play at all from early position. most people also make the mistake of playing too many crappy hands. be selective!

heres a good hand chart i would recommend a beginner-intermediate player go by:

    Code:

    or

i started playing out sng's and a few mtt's but since christmas i've been playiing full ring cash games and a little short handed cash games. always play no limit too :)

i think the easiest game to start are the single table sng's but the most profitable at the micro stakes is short handed no limit cash games. full ring cash is my personal preference though and is what you will find at most casinos

less skepticism please. i'm just trying to make some friends in this forum using what i think is my best asset

I AM NOT THIS GUY LOL ======>> :banplease

every now and then. i dont live very close to one but i usually play for fun when i am in the area of one.

people in casinos are gamblers so they are easier in my opinion but most casinos have some brutal rake. on top of that, its good to tip the dealer which takes from profits. also, dealers dont get paid much for live tournaments so they usually have the blinds go up fast. fast blinds = more luck involved in the game thus lower long term profits

it is more fun though with someone staring you down or owning some rich lawyer guy or whatever. i live in northern california and they have a few indian casinos up here. my favorite that i have been to is feather falls. i'm hoping to go to vegas sometime soon but in the mean time, its online for me!

    you would be surprised.

i tried this with a group of friends back in college. it did work for the limited hands we played but barely. the thing is when you gang up on one person, that means that everyone else is just giving up money to play every hand (the pot gets raked by the house). therefore you are slowly losing money to the online casino.

also, at higher levels especially, it is pretty easy to spot collusion unless the players are good at it. poker sites are able to see every card a player has so if they review your hand history and you look sketchy, you get the ban hammer!

$1000 a month with poker is really easy. Provided you know how to play in real life of course. Online poker is so much easier than real life poker.

People who lose an arm and a leg in online poker... usually are those who doesn't even know how to play in real life. If you know the real life version, ur good to go. Just need some tweaking and observation.

this is true. making money playing poker is easy once you learn how. its just a little math (3rd grade stuff... really!) and a little bit of awareness of what other players might have.

when i went $0-1000 though it wasnt just like i got lucky and luckbombed a tournament. i played 56k hands with a steady win rate. i dont know if online is easier. it all depends on where you play live i guess. everywhere i have been though has some good live players but for the most part they are just gamblers who chace draws. online has more people who know what they are doing but since there are more people in general, it kind of evens out.

that is why online you need to table select to maximize your profits. live you just play the table thats playing. onine, there are literally 100,000 to 200,000 players online at once on a major site.

I find it much, much easier to earn money with poker at a live casino. Many players that are playing online do it for a living, or are at least trying to make money. At the casino, players see it as paying a price to have some fun. Gambling. Push the chips in the middle, see what happens. Just my .02

    lol we will see. :)

to be honest i think heads up is my weakest game. i only play what i know i can win ;) but ya... if anyone is ever on pokerstars, just look up "callmelucid". i have only gone online the past week or two to record videos but once i get more money from my online projects, i will definitely be playing live and at some of the higher stakes! i pretty much cashed most of my bankroll out to invest in some online stuff that i am learning about. if it doesnt work out, i can always play some more poker :D

@callmelucid...what would be the ideal level to play at?

Really small limits is full of drunks and people who bet crazy which seem to be able to take out people who know what they are doing. Go to high and you will be playing the pros. Where is the happy medium, where most players know the basics and and wont take stupid risks (that seems to pay off when I'm heads up with them)? Cheers

lol i know what you mean by those players. for the longest time i got so pissed at them.

the funny thing about the human brain is that we tend filter trends in our mind that dont exist. it took me a while to realize that. those terrible players in the long run ALWAYS lose to you making the same stupid plays. its tough but just shake it off and be focused on the bigger picture. it helps to get a program like pokertracker3 or holdem manager to see how you do in the long run (sharkscope dot com if you play sit n gos). then you will see how well you do in the long run and you can adjust your game based on the players at your level.

the optimum level.... for me the optimum level is whatever level i am on. it sounds conceited but it is true. years ago when i would blow away money, i was playing 400nl because i thought i was a winner lol. the only way to be a winner though was to understand every aspect of the game and each level helps you understand new things about your own game...

that is why i did the $0-1000 challenge. i learned that i was a crappy 100nl player when i was playing $2nl because i was having a hard time beating it! i studied a lot (reviewed my hand histories after each session and read close to 20 books on poker and gambling lol) but in the end i was able to crush 2nl for 34bb/100. to put that in perspective, if a player is making 5bb/100 at a level, he is considered good.

i played so once i had 20 buyins for the next level, i took a shot at it. i moved down if i went below 18. so i was constantly pushing to get better and rise the ranks. this is why the current level i play at is MY optimum level

just find the level you are getting 5bb/100hands at and try to push your bankroll to the next level. do not be afraid to move down as poker is a learning process as much as it is an investment

heres my graph for my $0 to $1000 challenge. see it is a gradual process as each level i need to break in and learn new stuff even though the profits are larger in dollar amount!

you can still play on quite a few sites. i think there is one or two states that dont allow it legally but for all the rest, you can play on pokerstars, full tilt, ultimate bet, doyles room, bodog, absolute poker, etc.

if i lived in europe though, i would play partypoker. i hear the tables are super soft there

    Just chiming in =)

I find it most profitable to play in $1 -2 NL. I always have at least 3 to 4 tables opened on my desktop so I don't impulse bet coz of boredom.
