Germans, is it easier to rank German or English sites in general?

I am not sure whether it is easier / better to focus on the US market or the German market. I found a few pro and cons for targeting the German market:

+ in many profitable niches the competition is lower than in the english speaking market

+ You can create quality unique content by just translating Articles from English --> you don´t need a writer and save money

    - finding a good and cheap backlinkbuilding service for .de or .at sites is very hard. Some say that you can rank without targeting german sites at all but only with english backlinks , while the majority says it best to target both markets regarding backlinks (if you know a good service for .de, please share it in this thread or write me a PM)

    - outsourcing is way more expensive --> much more time consuming

In general it looks to me, that german sites are better to start out in SEO (less costs, less competition generally) while English sites are better if you are already experienced and have a bigger budget (cheap outsourcing)

    What do you think?

Pretty much this, even though I speak perfectly German (I'm not one) I never seriously went for that market. But I know from some close friends that you can make some good money there as well.

Do you know if they take a service for german backlinks or if they do it themselves?

I provided some GER SEO services in the past.
Surely it is easier to rank if you compare number of backlinks/authority vs. english sites.
The severe difference is the cost in maintaining a productive linking environment - it is very hard to find i.e. cheap german writers and all nice automatic tools like spinners are basically only working in english*. In the end you have a much less return on investment when compared to english sites.

*I know, not in principle but de facto comparably useless in other languages to my experience.

I'm currently trying to rank some german sites (doing SEO myself). I'll add some info when I'm done testing :)

    Hello,

yes, it is much easier to rank sites on google.de than on google.com

But also the market is much smaller (compare how many people in the world speak english and how many speak german, Germany, Austria and Switzerland are very small countries). So you`ll get much, much more traffic with english websites.

This doesn`t work. I haven`t found any translation tool which delivers acceptable results.

If you're a german, then go for the german market. There are less com, and it will be easier to rank.

Going for the German market in my opinion is great because of the currency you accept. Being in eCommerce I would say
currency means a lot and I have less competition say in the German market and I have tax advantages.

    Well,

I am a native german speaker and I disagree with your statement below :

German quality content is pretty hard to get, even if you use US/UK full-time translators, they often don't get the topic right or don't find the right words your niche audience would use as well....

Germans care about quality, a poorly written article or an article which openly/aggressively promotes products will result in a VERY HIGH bounce rate..

    Best regards !

The major problem for creating links is content, spinners are basically non-functional, quality german writers are more expensive in comparison to english content and your target pool for linking domains is also more limited.
