Geo Targeting on google

Has anyone used and had success with using the geo target meta tag to aid in local search results. For example when someone types in your state in the keyword?
<meta name="geo.region" content="US-STATE" />

I just found out about this and was curious if google is honoring this tag and considering it in their search algorithm

can anyone please advice on this,i am also dwelling on the same query?
