I am targeting niche keywords on low competition markets (third world countries).

If you want to make sure to rank a certain site for a keyword in one specific Geographical area, what would be the process to make sure that this one keyword grow ranks in that particular area effectively.

example : If I want to rank for "expatriate health insurance" in Ghana where competition is obviously not as high as in the US. What do I need to do to make sure the site moves up the ranks for that keyword in that country and not necessarily another or competing with US data centers. Or is it just automatic ?

Only 3 things I can think of :

    1. It helps if the target domain has an extension for that country but it's often not the case (.com or .net are more frequent)
    2. You setup the main Geo target of your site in Webmaster tool section.
    3. Get backlinks from authority sites in that country. (Not that easy to find/get)

But besides that, would anything help make sure that the full power of your backlinks gets added to that particular keyword in that particular country ?.

Any International/offline SEO expert care to shed some lights. It would be appreciated.

    thank you

    JF

    Jeff,

I hate to point out the obvious if you are already aware of it but don't forget using localized key terms. I'm not familiar with creating buyer persona's for people in Ghana and I'm unsure of how cultures there use search engines but I would venture a guess that people using a search device in any part of the world would eventually discover that by combining a key term with the location they are in might yield more focused results. (i.e. keyword + country, city, town, etc)

    Hope that helps,
    Shawn

Hi Shawn. Yes obviously ;-) , it should have been on my 4th points. My scenario pertains more to terms that do not include GeoLocalizer. in my search example, someone would look for an health insurance while in Ghana but not necessarily adding Ghana at the end of it or the town he his in.

the best advice for all buyers who want to rankin a particular area is using localized key terms. Absolutely agree with TheContentAuthority! Go to "KW+ country/city/town.." where you want rank in. I see result soon when my client do the same. Very quick result.

My personal experience: i have ranked sites for Spain, with .com, .net and .org, without using any backlinks from that country extension (.es) , so it is possible. As a recommendation just point the your site to the coutnry in webmaster tools. If you wish to do all this faster i would reccomend to buy a domain extension in your target country.

Don't use the Webmaster tools Geo Targeting tool unless your domain exclusively targets one country. Even Matt Cutts advises against this... Doing so will give you a boost for that 1 country, but will hurt your ability to rank in all other countries.

Have a look in Google keyword tool and try to find the best combination of Keyword + location you can and target that phrase. That should help your website be more optimised for that specific location.
