Just looking over some social sites today and there a number of them where you can amass a friend following, but its clearly a manual process and looks to take a lot of time.

Is it worthwhile even working to build fans/friends on these sites, or just forget about it, use them for linkbuilding and concentrate on facebook and twitter?

You just need to make sure that you come across as a real person and that you have an offer to monetize the traffic.

Free CPA offers would work best in this case.
    Or dating offers.

friends gathering is equivalent to creating a mailing list. i personally believe that anything manual can be automated or outsourced. but then again, there is no point creating a mailing list for social sites where people rarely check, e.g log in once a month.

The thing with gathering friends is that most of them are not interested in purchasing anything.
So if you want to make money of them you need to monetize them via free offers.
