Is it worth uploading free to play games(games like STO ), and older games that are on sale at first while building the niche to reduce initial investment. Or would newer games bring more traffic faster to make up for the increased costs?

New games are better, but that doesn't mean new games that cost money. Any newish game that there are a good amount of people playing will be good. What kind of videos are you going to make? Let's play? Tutorial? If you make let's plays you will probably need some type of gimmick. Example: PewDiePie gets "scared" lol

Lets play, like how theradbrad and tmartn2 are.
 
If you are pretty good in a certain game ( paid or free ) and you have good video editing skills, then it's definitely possible.I personally prefer games, where you can create something unique and show it to the audience, like gta 5 mods for example or minecraft jump maps. It's all about creativity.

Yeah for those types of videos it helps to do high end games till you grow a big audience. After that you can pretty much play whatever you want no matter how stupid the game is, lol. You could try any game really and see how people respond to you though. If you are a pretty slutty woman it's easier though, HAHA!
 
You can put both of them together like keep a lice streaming of a regular game and keep uploading the regular game twice or thrice a week. (Bigger videos)
And new games you can use a buffer like daily upload, I know its really tuff if you play, edit and upload everyday.
 
I started a gaming channel with playing older games ,2001,2002-2007.The ideea behind this was the fact that i enjoyed playing this games back in the day and i wanted to replay them.Its all about having fun at the end of the day....if you have fun your viewers will have fun.I also play newer games,like DOOM,MAFIA 3.I have yet to get any decent suscribers,but hiting big on youtube is really hard.
 
You'll have better luck with new games, but older games will be easier to rank for. Sure, not as many people will be searching for a Pokemon Red Let's Play as an Outlast 2 Let's Play, but ranking for a Pokemon Red Let's Play will be easier than ranking for an Outlast 2 Let's Play.
