I've noticed that a series of keywords that share the same two-word phrase have completely dropped off Google. They went from between 9-18 to absolutely off the rankings.

The odd thing is that the site still ranks for all of it's other keywords as well as ever. I would think that this is purely a page-based penalty, except for the fact that there are a couple keywords that are still ranking well for that same page. So it appears to me that this MIGHT be a keyword-based penalty if there's such a thing. Anyway.... what can I do about a situation like this? :(

It's kinda crazy, but I'm kinda going through a similar issue... My phrase is a two-word phrase as well. We took the initial hit (from 3rd to 5th) back at the end of December, and then again (from 5th, to 10th) mid January.

(my thread: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/black-hat-seo/526979-went-down-google-page-ranking-dropped-rank.html)

If you end up coming across anything, please let me know. I've been trying everything :(

I think it must have been related to using a specific anchor too much. The question is if this penalty would effect the rest of the site for that term... does anybody know more about this type of slap?

Same thing happened to me!!

I have several keywords that dropped completely while still ranking for long tail keywords...

I think it's over optimization penalty. Anybody that recovered from this??

diversify ur anchors!

Yep. EXACTLY what is going on with me. I wonder if any of you have ACTUALLY been able to get out of this penalty. And if so, how long it took. It's for my main keywords, which sucks... so if it can't be overcome I might have to switch domains soon. Ideas?

Some phrases/pages on one site disappeared from page 1 last week. Coming back to page 4-5 now. Building naked URL links in very small quantities... But most of these are low/mid comp, not sure how competitive your phrases are.

Funny thing is that the high comp phrases are as dominant as ever on the same site!

I'm going to drop naked URLs too and see if that can effect it. I'm thinking velocity may have been an issue as well. Keep me updated.

So far these 2 things have been working:

1 - naked URLs. small quantities.
2 - I went back in to the slapped pages and added a couple sentences or an additional paragraph of unique content.

Every KW shot back up, close to where it was before last week. I've confirmed this with about a dozen KWs. Hope that helps you too.

I'll try this as well... I need help BAD though. The diversification campaigns I've run have done NOTHING at all. I'll begin dropping in the naked URLs and add some content over the next couple days and see if that doesn't work.

Arrrrrrrrrg!!!!! This is rough...

Anybody have further ideas or experiences with this type of Google penalty?

I also saw something similar to few of my projects.

If this is true, doesnt that meant that one of the weird updates that we saw over the last 10 days had something to do with Penguin?

Google denied the update that took place on Jan 17..even though the whole industry reported it.

Weird as fuck.

I'm pretty sure it dates back even a before Jan 17th. I got hit with the exact same penalty as described on December 27th.

I've been building various anchored backlinks for the last few weeks. I finally started moving back up this past week...

Slowly but surely, it'll recover.

This one hit me around December 30th... and it went from teen/20's down to 90's.... then a couple days later it went off the map as a whole. Just just for keywords containing one phrase, not the longtails of it though.

So you guys are saying naked urls seems to be helping?

What about generic terms "click here" "more info" etc. ?

Also the brand/domain of the site itself?

I will try building only naked urls as well and will see what will happen.

What would you say are small quantities?

Same thing happened to one of my sites. Still ranking top 3 for most keywords but some keywords have dropped from top 10 to not in top 100...

A quick question regarding this 'penalty'... if you look in your Google Webmaster tools, do you notice a huge drop in your 'Links to your website'? Also, if you look under the 'How your data is linked' on the Links to your website page, do you notice a huge drop in the keyword/phrase you were penalized on?

It seems as though this penalty not only completely destroyed my ranking for the keyword, but it also devalued all my backlinks with said keyword/phrase.

Can anyone who also got hit with this penalty verify?

No huge drop... just the root keywords dropping off
