All a site like BMR had to do was spam backlink random websites and the fallout would have been too much for G to penalize BMR linked sites. Same goes for ALN and any other high profile blog network.

    My predictions.

    (1) People are going to go haywire with Negative SEO
    (2) Blog Networks are going to randomly backlink to quality sites as insurance and if/when G hands out rank penalties, half the web is going to erupt.

Seriously G, why don't you guys think 2 steps ahead before unleashing this level of stupidity?

That is assuming that there is a penalty that comes with the BMR de-indexing. If you have a diverse link portfolio, I really don't think this will effect your site too much. My BMR posts have been getting de-indexed for the past couple weeks, and I have seen a rise in rankings. If you only rely on this network for your backlinking, then yeah, there will be an issue.

Throwing a couple thousand blog posts at allstate.com or geico.com isn't going to have much of an effect if those posts get deleted/de-indexed. As you said, these are quality sites, with very diverse link portfolios.

Look around, it's not a question of if but when you are going to get a ranking hit. If you have Webmaster Tools, there's probably a message in there now and give it another 2 weeks to see the slide.

The insurance idea isn't about Allstate or Geico. It's about random medium sized-sites that drive the web that would all get knocked down in a heartbeat since most won't have millions of backlinks. You do that enough then the fire in the kitchen would be too much.

I don't know where you've been, but there have been ways to negative SEO competitors on Google for a very long time. Be it bad-neighborhood backlink campaigns, or excessive backlink building. The only difference now is that they're becoming more and more strict, and you're actually being notified of the penalty. And as much as it infuriates me that they're doing this, it's not like this wasn't expected.

I am going to go out on a limb and say there won't be a penalty just the losss of link jouice from deindexing. We can't know for a while longer yet though.

Less than a 5% link profile from BMR would be enough to slap your site... think about the implications. And yes, you could negative SEO before all of this but never this easy and never this damaging.

We'll see about that. My site which contains links form a service on this website, linkvana backlinks, bmr backlinks and my own web2.0 backlinks rose from 12 to 5 last 4 weeks. (had around 70 BMR backlinks, which was about 20% of my links I guess).

    actually Negative SEO is HISTORY.
    2 reasons why
    1. BMR and most other networks are DEINDEXED..means G isnt even counting any links placed on them. The spider sint crawling those sites at all.
    2. Now that anchor text diversity is more important, its hard to blast a competitor, Youd be helping them out more, as soon as they build links using their other keywords, the KW you blasted them will only get more stronger!

If blog networks don't for you anymore, your competitors will suffer too. :)
