Yesterday I had a big day of unique visitors to my site, the biggest in a long time. I'm doing some small link building so at first I'm thinking this is typical. Most of the hits came in on terms that I am ranking #1-3 on. I use statcounter, which shows me the position in the serp the user came in from, but doesn't include the search term because lately most are encrypted. So I got all these hits from terms that Im ranking #1-3 and on many inner pages that I don't get much action on. So im like OK cool.

I dive a little deeper and most of the "unique visits" came from big G headquarters in CA, all from different IPs, different browsers, search terms, resolution, operating systems etc. I have no idea what keywords cause they're all encryted. I don't use GA. But whatever terms they are using im ranking top 3 and many inner pages too.

I checked my webmaster tools and there is no message there. Something seems fishy.

Anyone got any idea whats going on, what G might be up to, and what I should expect?

Why do you use webmaster tools and invite them in the first place?

Hmmm are you even sure these are G employees? For all I know Google does not usually do manual reviews out of the headquarters but they outsource it to companies all around the globe. In my opinion you're fine.

I'm curious to ask, have you done anything recently that you think might call for looking over your shoulder? I wouldn't worry too much about that unless your traffic has spiked heavily in a niche under the spotlight by G and you're doing some hardcore blackhat shit to get yourself these results.

Probably just Google's crawler bots checking everything on your site is working as it should do. Nothing to worry about.

Does your site offer free fleshlights, special dildos and such? That may explain their sudden interest. You know googlers....

I don't think the Google Crawler bots would show as using a Web Browser.

It's really hard to say though, it could be anything. Maybe you did something wrong, or they're just trying to make sure your site is legit for it's ranking. Or... I know this is a bit of an odd scenario, but working for a big Web Hosting company, we would have training classes with lots of new employees, and the teacher would actually pullup real customer accounts and have the whole class visit the website so they could analyze certain topics (including SEO and ranking) for learning purposes. I know it's a bit farfetched, but why else would there be so many different computers visiting unless you are misunderstanding the statistics.

    Thanks guys.

No they are not bots. the data does not say g$$glebot, they have all different browser and resolution info, are coming to the site via several search phrases, all of which I am ranking 1-3 on (don't know which they came in encrypted and they're not my money terms or main pages cause im checking that regularly)

    AND

some have stayed on the site for hours.

They re-visited today, and same thing, not as many uniques but they are hanging around.

i took some of the inner pages they we're checking out, and searched for it by page title and target kws
    and nothing is in #1-3.

is it possible they're manually pulling my rankings off, one by one, for such obscure, long tail (but related) KWs?
do they do that out of mountainvale? would I get an WMT alert or anything?

    weird

They 'might' just be checking whether you are serving the same content to all the user-agents, browsers and IP addresses or not. In this case I don't think they will really use the user-agent of googlebot. If you are not doing anything fishy (like serving different content of search bots) then you have nothing to worry about.

Or it might be Google's crawlers which I assume they host in/run from HQ instead of free hosting? :D

share the IP please! I doubt it's coming from right inside the headquarters.

Someone is probably scanning your site for vulnerabilities and making it look they are (G) so you don't block them.
