my computer died this morning....wouldn't start, wouldn't repair, nothing....had to wipe out the HD and reinstall windows....

I lost sooo much off of my hard drive...usually i don't care, but i lost some irreplacable stuff....like baby pictures... i'm so upset about that....

i mean programs and stuff can be re downloaded...but i had 15 GB of family pics....

i don't understand why windows doesn't have an emergency function that allows you to grab pics and documents during a crash...

There are people who specialize in data recovery off of fried hard drives . Yes it cost money but is those family pictures worth it?

Why no backup of the HDD ?

BTW, IIRC, System Mechanic Pro, comes with a tool to restore erased files. It may work on a drive after a reformat.

And before you get a ton of stuff on the machine subscribe to a cloud backup service...

It's worth the cost. Been there, done that.. ONCE. Never again will I be without a daily backup.

I have been there and done that. Out of all my pictures I lost there is only one that I cannot replace. My daughters and I in the Gulf of Mexico parasailing. I wish to this day I had that picture. They were so young and so scared. But so was I.

Look it at the bright site... when you buy a new computer, you have a clean one.

No spam, no unwanted programs, no virus, no full inbox, no shit like I have to do map

    Yust clean...

You have only to reinstall everything you think you need, and never use again.

Sorry you lost your pictures... but I guess if you are like me.. you never look at the pictures ?

Now you have time to do fun things with your family.
The excuses is you have to make more great pictures from them ?

Damn.. why did'nt crashed my computer ? I have to get a life verry quick...

These threads pop up all the time, you think people would learn and back their shit up. Especially if you have pics of your kids. ALL hard drives fail, its just a matter of time. You can do the online backups as suggested or just buy another drive to backup too. Its really easy and the drives are so damn cheap now that you can get a 1 tb drive for $89.

You can pay someone to recover it but that is not cheap either and won't be as easy since you formatted and re-installed.

I lost my shit once too but I keep it all backed up now.

At least you have the memories in your mind, a still picture is just a fraction of second of time, though it brings back memories, just enjoy your time with your kids.

sorry to hear that. I think I'm gonna share rollback rx and eaz-fix, 2 most convenient system rollback and rescue softs,on BHW.

Another way to rescue your data on failed windows system is to dual boot linux and Windows. Linux never fails. So if your windows fails, just boot to linux and copy all data over.

thanx for all your kind words....i'm looking into some hd recovery programs...i hope i'll be able to recover some stuff....but a part of me doubts it..

about 90% of my stuff on my hard drive is recoverable.....and to be honest, it's stuff i don't care about...i can always reintall stuff that's no biggie

but that 10% of pictures, original artwork, and stuff that don't really make me money...or stuff i don't use for work...that's the part that pisses me off....

yeah, i know i should have backed up my HD....so i am part to blame...but now i'm all down cuz that's it, those pictures are gone and my baby's growing up so it's like those memories are gone.

    damn damn damn

Its always important to backup important files to a DVD or another HD at regular intervals, especially family stuffs, as its looks pretty nice and emotional after viewing again years after..

Usually whenever I took family videos on my handycam, immediately I store to a DVD and keep it in safe place.. its all learning from a lesson

You know you really piss me off. I do back up my stuff. Both online and offline. Yes, I didn't back up one picture from our vacation. You can call me lazy, stupid. or whatever, but I was tired. I am not offering excuses. It was the reality of it. Two weeks of vacation then a little over a day at home resting from my 'vacation'. It was online storage, but it was gone there too. The company who takes the pictures only keep the pictures they take on their server for one week. Unfortunately, my vacation lasted two weeks, so it was gone before I even arrived home. In other words, shut up and mind your own business. I am sure you can and do better than everybody else around you. Of course, you did lose your data at one time, right? What a moron you are. Couldn't you have backed up your data first?

Sorry you get pissed of so easy, you should work on that. I just checked the rules and couldn't find where it said that I was not allowed to voice my opinion on hard drive threads on this board so just let me know where I can find that.

Now I may have been a little out of line and if so I apologize to the op for that and now hijacking the thread. I just wanted to emphasize the importance of backups. I was in that business for a long time and have seen a lot of people in tears because they lost their data and even good sized hotels & resorts that I worked for that wouldn't have backups so I may have got a little carried away but didn't mean to be dis-respectful. Its unbelievable how many clients I ran across that would backup their important data until something bad happened.

I know I am not any better or smarter than anyone else. But I guess you are and that gives you the right to tell me to shut up?

But if you lost some mexico pics, thats just a good reason take another vacation and go back before the kids get much older :)

Another good backup utility is Acronis, you can just image your drive and its real easy to restore everything just the way it was.

There are a lot of tools as mentioned or I pull the bad drive and add it as a slave to another working computer and I can usually recover any data before attempting a re-install.
