I will continue. From my experience i can tell that all the hosting providers have some problems at some time.
I bet that fsckvps.com will be very careful in the future after this hacking...

    [EDIT]
There are rumors that the Credit Cards numbers were exposed ....

WOW, that really sucks that they lost all data. Pretty funny, but sucks lol.

Yeah, if they got root access to ALL the vps servers and deleted everything, your CC info + personal details are stolen for SURE. Unless they encrypted the CC details, but since its recurring billing they would have to have a way to decrypt them, so I'm sure the hackers figured that out with ease.

Also, thats tragic to hear about the HyperVM guy... seems he was extremely troubled, so I guess his friends could have seen that one coming.

    Yup.. very sad news indeed.

This should be a huge wake up call.. Back it all up every day and have several versions of it backed up.

Tons of ways to do it but back it all up, all the linkwheels, blogfarms, main sites, mysql, and your workstations. You never know when things you don't control will rear up and bite you in the ass.

This hacking thing is out of control, today mako solutions got hacked! and my host is hosted on their servers.. I don't have anything important on the sever but it still makes you feel like crap..

Now I'm kinda paranoid about the host I choose cause it seems like ever other day some one is getting hacked!!

Yup, I saw in the news a little while ago that the HyperVM killed himself over the exploits. Talk about dedication haha. If you're paranoid, just email the company in question and ask if they use HyperVM and if they do, ask if they have it updated and what not.

As for the credit cards... I wouldn't typically expect this kind of a thing to pose real risk for fraud, but I'll admit that deleting everything is awfully suspicious. Still, people make way too big a deal out of credit card fraud. I mean, you know the company got hacked... if anything does come up on your CC bill you have proof that the numbers were exposed.

Actually I was on a shared hosting with cPanel, so it wasn't Hypervm.. goes to show you there's exploits in everything!

the problem with shared hosting is anyone can get an account and install software that exploit the network from within..

I think that's what happen to fsckvps, supposedly Rus the owner used a very weak password and the hacker was sniffing passwords for 2 months from withn the network.. they only used hypervm to execute the command to delete all files..

I hear ya smile , I think you nailed it on the head there, it's the competition thinking your hosting co. is charging too low and that your hosting co. is ruining their margins..

If it was the intent of the hacker to steal your info, I would think they keep a low profile and sniff passwords instead of creating a big fiasco by deleting everyone's files!

I don't understand why it's the hosting providers fault...

In the case with fsckvps, I think it was a weak password that allowed the hackers to gain root access.. A statement made by the hackers mentioned that the owner actually used his last name in his password and that he rarely changed it. I think that keeping the integrity of the network is the responsibility of the hosting provider, and as such I belive that they were partly responsible since the hackers mentioned that they were on the network sniffing passwords for 2 months till they got bored and decided to delete everything...

Also I think people did backups.. but they had either left them on the server or they had two accounts and used one as a backup server and since all 50 or 200 servers were effected they lost all their data..

I was pissed off that my sites got deleted. However they did make me a new vps pretty quick, however they screwed it big time, and now I can't get in contact because their WHMCS license has run out.

    Hmmm, time to move...

Performance wise was the new vps just as good as your old one? I saw the unixbench results for the new one and it seemed slower than the previous!!

You would have thought they would have had a raid setup or a backup module so this wouldn't happen :S

They might have a backup for a2b2 which is their managed hosting.. but I doubt they did with fsckvps.. I mean really.. it's a $10 vps with 512mb unmanaged.. they're already giving you so much!!

but the best thing about them is they offer so many OS templates, I really want to sign up but I'm too paranoid about them getting hacked again..
