Just picked up an EMD for a kw that gets around 9000 exact searches per month. What strategies would you use to get it to #1 without sandboxing? Wordpress, link wheel, Xrumer, Scrapebox etc. Start slow and build up?

Start with Web 2.0 properties, than more and more, multi-tiers.

Then blast them all as buffer sites, that's all it takes.

Why not use WordPress? Its a platform that can be used to build a "Normal" website, not just blogs. Whats the deal with not wanting to use it?

IMO, if your only goal is ranking page 1 fast, WP is the easiest way to go.

Write some GOOD keyword optimized content.
Upload lots of pictures in the articles.
Keyword optimize all your site tags.
Article submission + Directory Submission + Bookmarking + Blogroll's and Commenting + Forum signature and making lots of "HELPFUL" posts in forums related to your niche + YouTube Videos (Atleast 10 with different titles)

Do all that stuff for 30 - 60 days then wait and let the big G slowly index it and you'll see your rankings fly in no time. Continue publishing new content on a regular basis to really stay on top of the rankings.

Start slow. Build up. Yes. Meta-data tweaking, Meta-tagging content, $25 FB marketing, Twitter exploits, should get you far enough. Then, buy quality, and when I say quality, I mean PR5+ backlinks, preferably more than those of your immediate competitor or the site that is now sitting at the top of the Big G search results. Slowly but surely, you will rise from the ashes and into the clouds. When you reach the #1 spot, look over your options. Then, rinse and repeat from there.

One of the most important things; make your content unique.
get designers & writers etc. or you can do it yourself if you have enough skills.
then take care of seo optimizing on your site. make backlinks from the sites of similar niche.

So true. There are cheap options out there for unique content for a minimal fee if you can't do it yourself. In the end, quality wins over anything. Although, might I suggest a cautious approach when hiring content writers, and be sure to run a plagiarism check before publishing anything. Have fun, and make some riches.

I would suggest to start with optimising your website - it has to be better optimised for your keywords than your competitors have managed that. I suggest for this job to use Seo Power Suite and do not forget about page loading speed as well.

only when it will be done - start thinking about the power of backlinks, google webmaster, d0follow vs nofollow and million other things.

.... yeah - get your domain (website) into dmoz :)

    :) you are welcome

On page focus, web 2.0, high quality articles, start slow and ramp up....great suggestions. Thank you.

Is domain age going to hurt me? This is a brand new kw, the competitors have domains as old as 7 to 10 yrs.

Is site speed slower with a wordpress site vs a hand coded css site?

Well, site age is not a compelling factor by any means. It should not be too much of an issue if you follow the suggestions by the kind BHW members who have contributed above. I would say that Wordpress is, in my experience, slower than hand-coded css, but due to ease of use, it is often preferred. Also, there are some very nice WP plugins out there. Search them here, and you may be surprised (pleasantly) by what you find.

    Good luck!

Right, the site speed may be a bit slower with WP...but the upside trumps any downside with ease of use and good plugins. I've done both. Just wasn't sure if Google would nick you for slightly slower load times.
