I fell into some freelance SEO for a friend of a friend of a friend...
I've never done any work for someone else so I have no idea what to charge or how to charge. So basically do I charge hourly, monthly, or what and how much?

If it makes a difference I'm in Vancouver, Canada.

you want to see what sort of value you will add the their business and work on a price that way.
Beenn looking to do something like this for my local businesses.

There are a lot of different ways to charge. Kind of depends on what the client is looking for, and what you will be doing for them.

This is a very broad questions without knowing the intricacy of your clients needs...

I typically charge $120 and hour for research and on-site optimization and $2500 for 3 months off-site optimization. Afterwards I sign them up for $200/monthly maintenance fee which includes 4/hours per month maintenance.

Would love to know what some of your folks are charging.

I have charged $20 for seo and the same thing for 20 times more depending on the customer, one was an internet savvy guy and the other a local business.

If your customer understands the internet and websites then you cannot charge too much, but..

If they know nothing then the value is what they perceive it to be. I have seen companies quote a local business $200 per month for knocking up a couple of keyword stuffed article pages.

ive seen SEOs charge anywhere between $100 consultation for an hour to upwards of $750 for an hour consultation...

read ur client... feel them out... if they know nothing u can make bank.. if they are savvy... tune it down, make em happy, and entice them to come back for more
