I've seen numerous threads on these forums where foreign posters want to know how they can get a free US based phone number to verify themselves with CPA companies. I figured this little trick out last night to get my own free Skype-In number so I could give people a US based Phone Number to reach me on Skype at my PC. This could also be used be for other things where you basically don't wanna give people your phone number.

    What you'll need:
Skype with a headset or mic

Google Voice (It's invite only at the moment, but soon to go public. I applied for an invite a couple weeks ago and already got my account. Hint: Use Gmail when requesting an invite.)

    Gizmo5 Account (Available at Gizmo5.com)

    Steps:

    1. First of course you'll need Google Voice. Last I checked invites were going on Ebay for about 5 bucks, but if you don't want to pay go ahead sign up for an invite and wait it out.

    2. Make an account at Gizmo5.com. This involves basically downloading the software at the website and going through the registration. Once you are registered login to your account and scroll about halfway down the page and you should see a heading called Forwarding Gizmo5 Calls. Gizmo5 makes this easy. Select the Skype radio button and put in your Skype Username.

    3. Below that section you should see another heading called Account Overview and under this is a SIP Number similiar to: 1-747-476-XXXX. Make note of this number.

    4. Take the SIP Number from Step 3 and forward your Google Voice account to it. When you do this you should get a verification from Google to verify your phone, it will ring through to Skype so fire up your headset and get ready to verify your number via the 2 digit code. Once you are verified you are all done. You can now give people your Google Voice number to be reached on Skype.

    5. Enjoy your new US based Skype In/PC Phone Number!

If you found this useful, please hit the thanks button!

Please note that this won't work for Skype-Out, just Skype-In. But I know another trick for making free 5 minute calls with Skype. Dial 1-800-Free-411 and wait for the option that says, "Make a Free Call..." then just enter the number. On Goog-411 you're limited to just businesses, but not with Free 411.

But then again, if you have Google Voice you don't really need it because you can make calls with that. Haha.

I have the setup you talk about. Google voice accepted my invite request within a week. I set up the gizmo also. When it rings it rings through gizmo though. Not Skype.

There are lots of useful things you can do with this though.

How do you get it to talk to skype? I use skype already and it works great. There seems to be a delay lag for the gizmo. (I believe its based out of an Indian proxy and that might be why). Then again I might be getting lag because I "borrow" internet to all the available routers around me.

Also another good thing about getting your google number. You can have it from anywhere in the us (any area code). You can also Look up numbers with words in them like "food" or whatever so your number would be 972-423-food for instance but you have to search to find a good phone number. I found one with my name! so its pretty easy to remember haha.

Did you mean for it to just forward to your Gizmo5? I prefer Skype cause it seems less laggy than Gizmo so that's why I did it this way. Also because Skype-In numbers aren't free so it makes me feel like I'm sticking it to the man.

If you have it setup already to ring to your Gizmo, then just go to Gizmo's website and set it to forward to your Skype ID. Select the Skype radio button and put in your Skype Username under the Forwarding section at Gizmo5.com in your account.

Also, im thinking it may be possible to use two Google Voices over Skype for free Skype-Out if you want to make free calls from your PC. I have two Google Voices so I'm gonna try it and see if it works and will report back. It should work.

What I'll basically do is initiate a call from an independent Google Voice to my Google Voice forwarded to my Skype and see if the call goes through. It should work. I'll report back once I test it.

yup works like a charm thanks man

for out calls i just have to pull up the google voice dashboard and then select the number or user in the contacts and its working great. It calls me first on skype then proceeds with the call. Nice.

    No problem.

Haven't had a chance to try out the 2 Google Voice's method, but I'm also guessing you could just use Jajah.com to achieve the same result. Again, I'll report back.

Okay after testing this with two Google Voice accounts, I discovered that you can't call one Google Voice account from another. Every time I try, it gives me an error. I'm not sure why they set it up like that, but no matter really because you can just initiate a call from Google Voice to your forwarded number that you have set to your Skype-In and it will call you and the call will go through free of charge. Google Voice rules.

You can even use RHUB`s free audio conferencing service to verify yourself with C PA companies. It works well.
