You don't need to utilize tool difficulties. You can use Chrome extensions to overlay back links etc. And then it's a case of checking on page and stuff like title and search intent etc.

I personally feel Google autosuggestion and Google KW planner are the best. Google KW planner will also provide SEO difficulty as well, but not in numbers. It will categorize into Low, Medium and High competition. I think that is more than enough to understand the competition. And MOZ free extension will also give you SEO difficulty, I'm not so sure. But as far as I know, it's better to depend on Big G data than third party sources since we all want to drive traffic from G itself.
