What is the free cellphone and 200 minutes a month about? Is it some kind of scam the people are running to get money from the gov't?

i'm not sure what your talking about but from what you have said, i think they get ppl in with these kinds of offers rope them into a 12 month contract, some ppl will go over 200 minutes - they make money, ppl will use texts - they make money and in the first place the actual monthly payments for 12 months will more than likely outweigh the value of the phone + 200 minutes a month :)

my girlfriend has it. Its not a scam and you have to have some sort of current govt. program (food stamps, wellfare, etc)

    I think its safelink.com.

I read reviews on it, and I guess the parent company is based out of mexico. It does not cost her anything out of pocket, and the the minutes (260) renew at the beggining of each month. Only if you want to, you can buy an air time card and add on more minutes. The phone came in about 5 days after filling out the information on the site. She was approved in about 30 minutes

It's not a scam it's for low income individuals, companies I've seen are safelink and assurance........I'm sure they get something for offering phones to the public in such a manner just like the state gets with programs like food stamps and WIC. The phones are on the low end, just basic candybar phones so they aren't spending much on those and activation costs are what they probably are getting money back for. Plus now you can pay a little to get more minutes or text messaging so there's an additional stream of funds as well.
